Should I still continue to work very hard to pull my GPA up?

  Okay, so here's the deal. I'v just come to the end of my 2nd year of studies in Singapore Polytechnic, going on to year 3. My cumulative GPA is about 2.96, should i really buck up and try to attain GPA 4 every sem now onwards for one final push in a bid to enter NTU Mechanical Engineering? or should I not waste my time trying to get a GPA 4? I got quite excellent CCA achievements and I have just completed extra an extra diploma program. Would any of these help in my bid to enter university?

  Im still riding on the very slight probability that the university would give me some consideration if i manage to score a GPA 4 these next two sems. Would it be worth it to attempt to get a GPA 4 each sem and hope for the best? I wouldn't want these efforts to be in vain.
