I just got my 'N' Levels result and I am only able to go to ITE or repeat.
I got 21 points and I really wanted to go secondary 5 and then to Poly. But now, it seems that I am unable to do that. I don't know which path to choose now.
(Before you judge and think that I am stupid or anything else.)
I didn't have the motivation to study until I met my sister and mother earlier this month. After I met them, I felt that there's more to life and found something worth going further in my life for. But it's too late currently as the results are already out. Now, I am determined to study and go to University but I don't know which path to take.
Can anybody please advise me to on which path to take?
how old are you? My advice to you is do really well in ITE. According to what my lecturer told me in ITE, if you score really well for the first year GPA 4.0 consecutive in all exams or test, higher chances you would be advance to poly.
I don't know whether theres still these kind of arrangement. No harm checking with your secondary school teachers. Cheers!
I'm 16 in a few days. Well, I talked to them and they didn't really gave me helpful advice... They only asked me to keep trying and say that I am just lazy and is smart. And my father keeps saying that ITE is bad and I should only aim to go Poly. This gives me confused feelings on which path to take...
you are still young. Its good you realised study is important unlike me only at the age of 20y.o then I literally woke up.
If you are really determine to study, try for an O levels, but it requires a lot a lot of hardwork. For the meantime, study or hire a tutor to guide you through then sit for an private O levels examination. After you have passed, POLY OF COURSE!
all the best
I know nothing of the private schools in Singapore and I don't come from a rich family. I just want a quick, short route to Poly and then to University. If I made it to secondary 5 this year, I would have studied real hard and went on to Poly. But now... It's either ITE or retain... It's so tough to choose.
there is no shortcut in life. Frankly speaking, 21 points can't make it to any good courses in ITE, even if there were, there are thousands of thousands students 'fighting' for that place. Therefore your chances of getting in would be extremely low.
just my two cents, if you are not interested in that course, don't waste your time getting interested. I would say retake N level, make the best of it. Within 3 years(or less) you would be in poly with the course you are interested in. Good luck!
Okay, many people is telling me to retake my N Levels. Well, okay then! I'll strife to do better next year. But it's weird though. My sister is 19 years old and already in University. (She's from the Philippines.)
i've no idea about that.. but still all the best for next year! Make it count
And also, can you tell me what are the pros and cons in repeating and ITE?
there are no pros and cons in repeating as well as in ITE. But come to think of it, ITE makes a longer route to your destination thats all. If you are a guy, defer your NS, complete your poly then enlist. Shit happens, repeating means you are ready to prove everyone wrong. Nobody is gonna looked down on you!! See who has the last laugh, good luck
Okay then! I'll talk to my father about retrying for N Levels. Hopefully he'll understand my decision...
First I would I like to ask you, what's your dream?
Do you enjoy tinkering with machines? Or do you enjoy writing? Do you enjoy chemistry practicals? Where do you enjoy going?
The most worth while path in my opinion is to retake your N levels.
This is because you have already studied the subjects before and will be easier for you to pick them up.
Going to ITE means you have to relearn new subjects, and if you don't do well and get a good cumulative GPA, you may have problems going to poly.
Your sister is from philipines? Have you thought about going to philipines to study there to get a degree? It may be cheaper than singapore?
Well, my dream is either to be a researcher on wildlife or a professional gamer. (Secondary). I still haven't fully know what's my real dream.
And If I were to retain, I would have to learn new syllabus next year...
And I'd have to stay in Singapore with my father...
Repeat N levels -> Sec 5 -> Poly = total 2 years
Nitec GPA 3.5> -> Poly = total 2 years
If you have interest in any of the nitec courses offered by ITE (and that course has direct admission to poly), you should take ITE route. If you are not keen in any, repeat your N levels
Well, at the end of the route. I want to study till University. So which one again?
Retaking shld be easier I guess
all the best (ATB)

Since you want to go to sec 5 and enter Poly via O level (which would enable you to opt for more Poly courses), you should repeat.
Rest assured. I doubt the new syllabus would be totally different. The change in syllabus was announced to schools last year and from what I heard from my school's HOD, the changes are quite minor. While there are new topics, the content for the other topics may be reduced. You should see it as one of the reasons for continuing to learn(if the syllabus remains the same, you would probably be tired of it and not have interst in learning) and motivate yourself to study harder when you repeat sec 5 next year.
well, I know very little about ITE but I think ITE may be suitable if you already have a very clear idea on what you want to be when you grow up.
If ITE has the related course for the job you want to do when you grow up, and you know you really want the job,
In short,
PervertedBoy, what If I plan to go to Uni?
I would suggest ite cause it is less risky then o lvl as the standards between o and n lvl is different. So if u fail o's again the route u will be taking is still ite.but if u can't take a course u want then repeating n lvl is ok
Hi
May i share with my newphew's case as a reference to you?
My nephew repeated and stay back one more year after failing his GCE O level(Sec 5). After 2nd sitting at GCE O level, he passed and managed to go to poly. As a uncle, i am close to him, these are his contributing success factors:-
1. Be exam trained
Keep doing ten years series and study less. He has been doing many, many qna in order to be to answer exam qs. Do you find it strange that although we study a lot but sometimes we still not able to answer qs?
2. Learned from your mistakes
Maturity grew after one failure and make your stronger to succeed. You must be hunger to desire for success. Without desire and determination, passing any exam will be difficult.
3. Study alone
Study alone with your mp3 is more effective than group studying.
4. You are accountable for your results
Passing exam is a personal journey, teachers, friends and tutors can only help so much, utimately, knowing it is yourself that produce results. Do not blame others for not helping you.
Pls take the above as reference only.
Wish you luck

Thanks Shazamnick! I'll keep your advice to heart! :)
If you go ITE you will have a slight advantage in poly year 1, like maybe some modules no need take, or you have experience in the related subject is some modules you have to attend.
But ITE is like poly brought earlier to you because the lecturers there (not all ah) will show favouritism and bias and the fellow students can be slack one or backstabbing one.
You redo your (N)A then move to sec 5 to do O levels at least it is in a familiar environment.
Just my 2 cents
Edit: also ITE is like poly but buuut but (subject wise) less hard/more basic like in project in poly more complex/more criteria to meet than in ITE project for the same subject/topic
you want go Uni both ways also can.
Well, none of the ITE courses interest me...

If like that then don't go into ITE yet
Push hard for 'O' Levels at the same time see what poly courses you interested in.
Edit: This is my advice/reccomendation only, the decision is of course yours to make
