As title stated, I usually go for 2-4 hours before exams N when nearing exams probably 4-6 .
Used to do practices and read up notes at least 12 hours or more per day when nearer to exams.
4-6 hours is pretty insufficient. More of the typical normal days.
Ultimately, it boils down to
1) technique of study
2) amount of time spent
3) personal motivation and goals
12 hours of seating ?! For which exam Mod?

LOL no choice lah. I will do that for my o-levels.

Doesn't mean u need to sit 12 hours :)
You could stand up and read. You could do power naps of 10 mins each in between each session.
Of course, in a school day, you won't be able to do it. I'm talking about school study breaks or weekends. You have 24 hours in a day, give 8 hours for sleep, 4 hours for other misc stuff if needed, the remaining 12 hours can be fully utilised.
prior to O levels,7.30>12.30(with breaks in between) 1.30>6.30. 8.00-10.00
around 12h~but it was ineffective as I somewhat burned out.
7.30>12.30 2.00>3.00 8.00-10.00 (8hrs of more rewarding studying experience)
For me as of now,I generally spend more time on revision before exams(normal days),exam period is merely to recap and rest. Practices should be done whenever free, not 1 week before exam.(unless it's a test)
@a mugger
You're from JJC too? LOL what class
Nowadays,I limit four hours to condensed revision.(practise for me is to learn,reading notes=recap) 2.5hr practise,1.5hr notes. 60% practise,40% recap
sorry, the thread is limited to discussion of the duration of how much time I spent revising.I shall not be permitted to comment.
Whoa you truly are " a mugger" xp .. Whats your motivation to mug for long? I seat down 1hr already butt hurt go play xp
1.competitive friends>I made friends with those who are rather focused and conscientious in their studies, instead of wasting my time in school chatting after eating lunch.Generally,I know a handful of the students receiving 3H2/4H2 A's. Some of them, whom I met during orientation, guided me well in my studies throughout the year.
2.A levels decides your fate on your career, not as much as O levels(except if you do mediocre and enter poly)It is one final leg I am pushing, although I am saving that last bit of energy for the finals. So now the curriculum for me,is study and rest, study and rest.
3.Ambition.Well,I don't aspire to be engineer, teacher, business or even IT.I can't imagine how it's like to teach a whole crowd of students, focus on making more and more money, sit at a comp all day doing research work and applying physics in my daily life.(engineer)I seek compassion and knowledge, both of which complement nicely to fit that of a doctor. So it is this passion, that pushes me up the hurdle and accomplishing greater feats.
4.Former expectations of friends/teachers.As much as you find it difficult to accept, these memories guide you towards reaching your goals. In my case, they are rooting it for me and motivating me to jump to greater heights.
5.short term goals and schedules motivate me too.I have a plan on what I want to accomplish.Get it done and over with, don't stone at the same page for so long.
6.The belief that sheer hard and smart work will pay off.You seen it work in movies, shows. It also works in real life,no matter how you compare yourself to someone from a different school.Being smart is one thing but hardwork is a more difficult trait to pick up than being clever in your studies.
7.Peer teaching helps me a lot.I have a friend whom I closely relate and ask questions for chem in class, after school. This provides me with an open avenue to ask relevant questions.
I am also a normal human being.Sometimes,I study for 1hr,I get this temptation to play, watch anime. However,I refocus my mind, think of what to accomplish for the day before relaxing. This accomplishment is over-powering and I feel like a loser if I play when I consider my friends learning(studying). Not only my friends, students from other schools are also putting in the effort to compete in the A levels.
School days:I come to school early to study~your brain works the best in the morning,it applies for me though.
A 1hr break in school for me is dedicated for me to revise,in which 30min is spent on doing short practices(mcq or recap before lecture)
To decrease the number of mugging hours:1.do consider tuition for some subjects you have difficult grasping.2.Come prepared for tuition/classes(if you read ahead,a greater likelihood that you are able to learn faster than your peers.)3.Understand concepts, don't memorise topics and vomit out in exams.
It's like only 10months before it is over, may as well, focus for this 10months.No studying again,no taking private candidate exam for A levels.Reminds me of the PC i see coming in to school to take their exams.(for Ns:2years getaway, girls:prepare for uni life)
@a mugger
You have good foresights and ambitions. Well said .

Erm... Not to be a wet blanket... But expectations may not be the same as reality....
I dont buy the theory of sitting down to study just for the sake of it.
This article sums up my take towards studying best.
Forget About Setting Goals. Focus on This Instead.
I wasnt some chao mugger, and I cut myself slack whenever I could.
But I could also spend up to 3 hrs trying to tackle a question I could not understand.
Because I value my learning process.
There isn't any specific goal involved in it.
Just the belief that if I learnt more, and have a direction to work towards, I could discover opportunities further down the road.
Rather than try to think of what lies ahead, why not work on today and laying the foundations for tomorrow?

I want to press a like button and share lol...
Thank you for the compliment.
While I have also felt that the education system is too rigid, I think the mentality that the education system is actually responsible for "educating" all-rounders etc is worse.
I think rather than trying to blame people etc for the situation such as in this case, why not start now and avoid the trend of seeing learning as a means to some end?
10 Ways To Pass An Exam : http://youtu.be/I27krR-z9gI
everyone has different methods and durations for studying..i would say, do what you are most comfortable with. contrary to what is usual, i like to use my computer while studying at the same time.
and personally, i dun have fixed durations for studying. i would try to complete the assigments due 1st, and if i have extra time, i will try to understand/revise topics that i'm weak in.
How to Train Your Brain for Better Performance : http://amyscottgrant.com/brain-training-simplified
having june common test soon and studying 6 hours a day alr (not counting sleep + eat and break) and I literally had no form of entertainment during my June holidays. I think will be worse during my study break before As this year. ironically I'm still enjoying life like this~
hitting 8 hrs now~~>>Preparing for my PCMH exams for jc,A level year too.I still managed to slot in some break times(use comp 45 mins) Most of the time, its studying and laughing at my own misery. Hopefully,my efforts will pay off in this rat race
I've mugged for 6 hours at most, but having 15 min breaks does give a breather.
15 minutes study, 45 minutes sgforums.
damn stressed.
