Hello everybody, I have just joined in SgForums.com. :)
I recently registered in ACJC Biomedical Olympiad 2014 and I am very new to it. It would be very speical for me because my ambition is heavily related to the doctoral field of study. Additionally, I would like to join ACJC when I finish my O-Levels. :P
I am going to study really hard for this ACJC Biomedical Olympiad 2014. Since I am new to this type of competition, I would like to know more about how I can prepare for the topics.
The topics are Genitouriniary & Reproductive Systems with an emphasis on gross anatomy, general biochemistry and physiology as well as altered states and conditions.
Please give me lots of advices about the competition and what topics to study on. Provision of websites would be really appreciated. :)
Thank you very much!
There will certainly be significant overlap with the H2 Biology syllabus; as such, the websites recommended by H2 Biology tutor (and ex-MOE teacher) Duncan Ang, may be helpful :

So does that mean I will have to learn the topics related to Genitourinary & Reproductive Systems from that website?

You have to check with your teacher-in-charge (there is one, isn't there? either in your school, or in ACJC) regarding the ACJC Biomedical Olympiad syllabus.
The websites listed on Duncan's webpage, are merely supportive material. They cannot possibly replace formal Olympiad training, for which your school and/or ACJC is responsible for.
Hi kakmong,
I think you will have to focus on the below:
1) Normal Physiology Functions (abt the urinary and reproductive systems) - Readily available in normal A-levels Biology Textbook
2) Simple anatomy - parts of the reproductive and urinary organs: Bones (refer to perineum, pelvic cavity) and main organs involved [Maybe you can do a quick google search or invest in a biomedical anatomy textbook... ]
After you have learnt the normal structures, it's time for
3) Altered states (disorders and diseases) - Refer to some medical pathology textbooks [I think this is the bulk of the content since it is a biomed. olympiad...]
Good luck for your preparation and olympiad! :)
Hey I signed up for this biomedical olympiad too! Plus, my ambition is similar to yours :) I've been borrowing related reference books from the library and they're really interesting and rich of information so don't hesitate to do that too if you'd like to! GOOD LUCK AND SEE U THERE HAHA
Biomedical Olympiad is over and I attained a disappointing result of Honourable Mentions. Yet, I have gained roader knowledge and interest in Biology (even though I am not taking it because I chose Literature and Pure Physics + Chemistry combinations), and next year, I am aiming for Gold.
Thanks for the help, everyone! Good luck for the participants next year. I am definitely joining. :)
