Hi, i need advice from anyone who knows the education system in sg well.
I have a friend who's very interested in taking Japanese in JC. She had done quite a lot to learn Japanese by herself during secondary school already, but she knows that in order to improve further, she would need a teacher to guide her along. She also said that she really really wanted the notes provided in the Japanese Programmes.
This is what she told me based on what she researched:
- only top 10% of PSLE students are eligible. (which she is not part of)
- Only very few JCs offer it (she told me only RI offers it)
- In polys, will need to pay a huge sum for the programme ($300 per month? and she's not from some well-off family too).
Also, from what i gathered from her teachers, they said that such language courses are possibly available in universities as electives, but my friend said that by uni, the standard of such Japanese Programmes would be too high to catch up with & she would have to focus on just getting the skills for work. So now is a crucial time for her to further her interests in whatever she's or can even be interested in already.
So what are the real prerequisites of getting into such courses & what JCs other than RI offer it?
(Seriously only top 10% of PSLE can get in? Another chance for those worked hard during O level is not granted, especially like my friend who's passionate to the Japanese language?)
better off taking the jlpt...it is well recognized world wide. n when job seeking, the industries only consider the jlpt cert.
yea she will be taking that test too. But she want to attend the "normal" jap class in school as well.
I took foreign language classes at NUS instead. That's another option that could be considered ;)
