Literature essay troubles

Hello, I will be taking my 'O' levels this year and honestly I am very worried about my lit paper. Mostly because I've only been able to get marks like 12~15 / 25. It's either I almost pass or just pass. I was wondering if any of you guys have any helpful tips to share?
I'm following the PEEL format but I just can't seem to write what is exactly needed and tend to include a lot of irrelevant things. I would be writing a 2 1/2 page essay and would end up having only half of the marks for that questions. Can anyone help me pin point my problem? I really need help this year. I am taking full lit. Any help would be greatly appreciated
