Similar to desktop PCs, it's not very likely to die out completely and just become extinct. Desktop PCs still have their uses and advantages.
The same will apply to mobile apps. Apps like games, office suite is not suitable on the web platform. They will still need a native apps to perform their best. I will say it will end up being so niche that only a few companies will be doing it.
For apps such as Facebook, LinkedIn, they are more likely to go the way of dinosaurs as it's not feasible to create and maintain apps for Apple, Android, Windows, BlackBerry, etc. Mobile sites will take up this role, probably through HTML5.
Smart devices need the support of smart infrastructure as well. I like how Japan and Korea integrated various services together, like using their smartphones to pay for transport. Singapore still has a long way to go in this area. We are in some ways quite disintegrated.

I dont get you. You referring to programming or what? I wasn't referring to programming in general but programming with regards to mobile apps esp on Apple platform.

It would be incorrect to equate apps with game and office suite only. Right now in the US, there are business-to-business apps out there that is replacing the role of credit card.
As for facebook and LinkedIn, I have no comment. Yes, to future seems to belong mobile-enabled sites.
To clarify myself. I also wasn't refering to smart devices per se but ubiquitous smart devcies. Maybe I should mention the word ubiquitous because it is the future yet unseen and its confusing to people who read it.

iPad Smart Cover Problem: Old Apple Smart Covers Don't Work With New iPad, Users Say

I was right!
My grandma who's never used a computer, is on Facetime now.. :D
I really pity the fools who rushed to pre-order an iPad 3 when they already have a perfectly-good iPad 2.
I mean, seriously. Is it worth it to dump a perfectly-good tablet for a new one?
Heck, why even buy Apple in the first place? To me, the need to use iTunes with only one computer to sync videos and MP3s is a great deal-breaker. I would rather just use drag-and-drop with any PC (which Android allows).
If someone were to give me an iPad 3, I'll sell it off and use the proceeds to buy a Galaxy Tab. Seriously.
