Hi!
I know that if plugging the laptop to AC for long periods of time, should take out the battery, but what if i have a built-in laptop battery? so how do i take care of it to ensure it can last as long as possible?
thanks!
newer laptop batteries have safeguards preventing them from overcharging. so you don't have to worry too much, though it would still be best to drain it once every so often.

charge battery only when near empty.
dun drop battery.
dun expose to intense heat / sun.
dun leave in car cuz hot.
dun confuse battery with baseball bat >.<

FYI, i mentioned built-in battery (aka non-removable).

i'm not worrying about overcharging. I know that if plugging to AC for long time must take out battery, but this battery cannot take out, so how?
My alienware has a built in battery too, alternate days, I'll just let it run on battery till its nearly 3% then plug it in, but it might be better to do a full drain then full charge, then I'll have to shut it down which I don't like. Its still giving me awesome battery life, about 4-5 hours.

It would be better if you just use it unplugged and then plug it in when battery is at <10%, then plug it back to AC until fully charged then repeat the procedure. This is kind of an odd thing to do though.

But this still will waste charge cycles, if on a laptop with removable battery, when on ac power and battery removed, no charge cycles are wasted.
I usually plug in my dc togerther with the battery at home.
When pointed to the battery icon, it said "not charging".

Anyone can confirm if it is okay to do this? thanks!
Battery will degrade over time.
Regardless of use or not use, it's going to be dead.
Should use it right away.

hmm...you did not answer my question.
BTW, i want to extend my battery's life through proper usage.
Depends on what kind of battery it is, if it is Li-ion battery then you don't need to worry about that at all. Since you mentioned this battery is used for laptop, in most cases it is Li-ion battery. Li-ion battery has no memory effect, so u don't need to take it out, but it will self discharge even if you don't use it. So the right way to protect it is to charge it every 3 months if you don't use it that often. And IT IS DEFINITELY WRONG TO CHARGE IT ONLY WHEN THE BATTERY IS NEARLY EMPTY. It will damage the li-ion battery. Don't use up the battery.
It's alright leaving the battery charged up.. yet the heat that is produced by the Laptop or any consumer device in question will degrade the battery over time (at a faster rate)
So the culprit is not overcharging but heat!

So if i need to use for long periods of time, i should just leave it charging?
if u use at home, remove the batt & plug in the AC adapter

"built-in battery"

if you read through, i want to extend my battery's life through proper usage.
Do you intend to unscrew and screw back everytime you want to use the Notebook's built-in battery?
The battery deteriorate will slowly deteriorate even when not in use.
Their lifespan start ticking immediately when they are made.
Why bother?
The most important thing is to charge completely. Wait until fully charged before unplugging.
Also, conserve charge cycles. Plug in whenever possible.
You can leave the battery in without worrying. Batteries on their own don't overcharge. That is a myth. Some people after charging 100% just unplug and continue using because they are afraid of overcharging. Big mistake.

Of course i have to bother, it will be troublesome to change a built-in battery every few years, not to mention that it is more expensive too. With the arrival of ultrabooks, people asking questions like this will probably be more common.

Thanks a lot. This link confirms my guess and also provided me some info which i never knew.
Cool right? I googled it one leh!
Therefore the moral of the story is that OP's Google-fu is not powerful enough.
End.
even li-ion batteries will die off with every passing year degrading little by little. proper use and handles such as charging it up periodically once in a while, maybe a week or a forthnight if you seldom use and drain it. keep it in cool dry place avoid direct strong sunlight, and for longer periods of time. li-ion batteries has it recharging cycles also, and once in a few charging cycles try to drain it completely right before a next charge.
after a few years probably you will observe the better lifespan and performance may degrade - then its time to change a battery - providing oyur notebook's still in production, and its accessories also. that's how manufacturers make money, make you buy accessories, or make you buy new models when their products EOL or accessories out of production or not avaialble anymore in retails.
worse are those modern models that has got build in battery ones - iphone, ipad and whatever slimguard pads without the wings.
