Hello everybody, I've a Sony Vaio which I'm not using due to constant problems this machine is giving. This Vaio is running on Windows 7 Home Premium (The Certificate Of Authenticity Sticker With Product Key No) is stick below my Vaio notebook.
I'm currently using another Dell Notebook which is currently running on Windows Vista (Vista Suxs).
The question is can I install Windows 7 Home Premium from my Damaged Sony Vaio to my new Dell Notebook? I'll no longer be using my Vaio because it's 100% damaged so I'll be using the Windows 7 Home Premium product key ON MY DELL NOTEBOOK ONLY.
Is it possible?
Potentially possible; but it's a hassle.

Potentially possible? Sounds like trouble to me already...
Care to elaborate?
Can't I do it the traditional method?
Thanks
You will first have to located the appropriate DVD for Windows 7 Home Premium, be it x86 or x64. That depends on what the sticker on your laptop says.
x86 - 32 bit
x64 - 64 bit.
The DVD MUST be an OEM DVD, not retail box.
What is OEM?
This is what it looks like.
A white paper packaging over a slim, transparent DVD casing. The COA is located inside the casing.
You will have to locate this OEM DVD, and not a retail one.
Following that, you will fail to activate Windows, because it's on a different computer.
You'll have to call up Microsoft and talk to an unknowing Indian man on the other end of the line to get your new activation code.
That, or just take the hard drive from your Vaio and transfer it to your Dell.
Yo SBS7484P, thanks for your reply.
The Windows 7 Home Premium that I have on my Sony Vaio came with the Sony Vaio itself when I bought the Vaio. It's NOT the OEM version that can be purchase at SLS.
Can I still do it? If yes, how? I mean do I have the call up the indian man somewhere in India and tell him another version of my story to get a new product key?
Thanks bro. You've been a great help.
OEM operating licenses as far as I know are tied to the motherboard of the laptop. It's a single use license which means it cannot be transferred unless the motherboard of the laptop of the same make and model is spoilt.
OEM licenses are also supported by the maufacturer in your case and are not supported by Microsoft.
Transferring your hard disk from 1 laptop to another, I suspect, might not work as the OS will check with the bios on the motherboard for confirmation that it is indeed a dell before booting up, else it will not boot up at all.

That's the simple difference between OEM and Retail Licenses.
OEM - Multiple times reinstallation possible ON that particular machine
Retail -Multiple times reinstallation, can be on different machines, but only one at a time.
You can try calling microsoft to see if they allow exceptions.
Edit: I have triple checked for my understanding on this thread (reading it plenty of times) and spent quite sometime verifying the facts with what I know to begin with information available online.

It is.
A key sold with a prebuilt PC is the same as the OEM kind that you find in Sim Lim.
