I'm getting my first laptop! I'm mainly using it for school, and watching movies/shows.. and the occasional game. I would love a bigger screen because I'd want to watch stuff on it. Budget's from 1k+ to 2k+. Any help is appreciated! :)
PS: Any good tips on where to get them, too?
Courts, SLS, funan

Tertiary insitutions (polytechnic/Univeristy) - get the laptops under the school's promo scheme
My impressions with getting laptops from Best and Harvey Norman are the best. Courts - A big no no
can try recommend to Digital Asia @ Funan. Look for a sales name: Henry. Sure he will recomend you the suitable one, even lower than 2k.
Sim Lim Square.
Any store except Newstead. They have issues.

emachines by acer
emachines by acer
eMachines is a joke.
They were a joke back when they weren't owned by Acer, and after being owned by Acer they are still a joke.
Posting it here is fine.
Please do not buy a laptop just because of freebies.
Mostly cheap crap, these freebies. Seagate external hard drives that drop like dead flies; and the list goes on.
Also, if your graphics card is a GT540M and below, it's pointless to have 2GB of VRAM.
Many people like to think that the more VRAM a card has, the more powerful.
My 1GB desktop HD5770 easily trashes a 2GB HD5670 in every graphics benchmark possible, at 1920x1080.
More VRAM just ensures that the card is more responsive at super-large resolutions. 2GB cards are usually equipped with powerful cores that can utilise this amount of VRAM (see HD6950, HD6970), so that the VRAM amount is not a factor that holds the card's performance back at resolutions of 1920x1200 and higher.
Get a macbook as os lion is coming out.
Acer Iconia. Cool Laptop. Buy 1 tablet and the dual screen one. I tell you, you shiok one.

It usually is mentioned in the spec sheet.
Also, take note of the type of VRAM.
A graphics card with 1GB of GDDR5 VRAM is very likely to perform much better than a similar core using 2GB of GDDR3 VRAM.
For example, a Mobility Radeon HD5470 with 1GB of GDDR3 VRAM is commonly sold in Singapore. Many laptops like the HP G42 and Asus A42Jr utilise this chip.
Overseas though, there are HD5470M's that are equipped with 1GB of GDDR5 VRAM. This increased memory speed translates to noticeable real-world performance.
The GDDR3 5470M is equivalent to an nVidia GT320M, whereas the GDDR5 version surpasses the GT320M by about 10-15%.
Not a huge increase, but it means smoother gameplay.
