Hi Ken and guys
This Sunday, probably will be going down to buy a wireless modem (I am not sure whether the name I use is correct or not).
Actually it is the old issue, I tried to search for my thread but unable to. That is why I repost again.
Last weekend, I was at IT show, and I saw a booth selling those yellow box (with 2 antenna at each end) cost around $45+.
As I am using the Speedtouch Singtel Broadband that is connect into my netbook. I am unable to move around.
So, I am thinking of buying that yellow box.
Anyone ever tried that? Ok?
Is it the speedtouch broadband connect into the yellow box?
And how should I activitate the internet explorer so that it will scan and connect?
Shall I need any software to download into the netbook? Mine dont have any cd writer.
Actually I did ask the salesperson (IT show) but they dont know what I am talking.
Plse help ya...thanks very much.
Modem is the communication device used to connect to the Internet.
Router is the communication device used to connect multiple devices together.
1 - Singtel Broadband, Speedtouch, you mean you are using the speedtouch adsl modem?
2 - Unable to move around = connected via LAN cable? (i.e. connected using a long wire with a registered jack like a phone line)
3. Yellow box is router? Wireless router?
4. Every router have their own router configuration page and custom GUI (customed graphical user interface aka each router has its own setup page, their own menu and features and varies from other brands)
There are router-modems from PROLink
See under Data communication (ADSL+Router) devices.
From Edimax:
There is both ADSL Modem+Router and Router only (see under ADSL Router and Router):
From D-Link:
See under Wireless Routers:
See under ADSL2/2+Modem:
Note:
I had been going through the brochures from the IT show... but can't find yellow box.
I assumed you needed a wireless router.
There are other brands such as Aztech, Zyxel, SMC etc....
But none so far that is yellow in color.
Additional Note:
If you are connecting your ADSL modem to your wireless router, the first time configuration requires you to connect using LAN (aka the cable you used to connect wired) so as to setup the wireless security.
It should NOT require a setup disc (but advisable to run thru the wizard from setup cd for simplicity)
Hi Nelstar...
Yes something like the pic you posted.
Mine is speedtouch that connect via telehpone line to my net book.
I thought of buying the wireless router so that my netbook dont need to be connect thru the phone line.
Should I get the wireless router from prolink since my net book is from prolink?
What you think about the price? (I am getting the cheapest one, fyi..I am using 2mbps singtel).
I will advise you to get a wireless router that supports 802.11 a/b/g/n
As for price, model and brand, my experience so far with D-Link is ok.
tot singtel r givin those 2 wire modem with wireless function?

If Sinktel, must recontract. If within contract, must buy.

The different frequency of wireless radio supported by the wireless router. It is best to obtain one that has backward compatibility.
consider Speedtouch modem is very very old already. pls check the configuration the modem before you decided on what to buy.
Thanks guy for your information.I will write down the spec of the speedtouch and ask the saleperson whether it compatable or not before buying the wireless routers.

LOL, don't worry about compatibility. The wireless routers are definitely compatible with the modem. If they are not compatible, they are not routers.
I believe they are suggesting to change the old modem to a wireless router/modem before the modem die due to wear and tear.
I think they have a good point.

Hi Nel, yes my speedtouch already more than 4 yrs. But still going very strong. Never fail me. I extended the contract for another 2 yrs since last Oct. Mine is 2pbms for $21 per month.
I wonder whether I call them to check whether any free upgrade but still pay $21? I have the intention to cancel with singtel (internet and home phone number) and goes for mobile stick (m1) that cost only $19 per month (2 mbps).

Mobile Broadband signal depends on your area's mobile coverage. Well, if you are not concerned with dedicated line, then you can consider getting the dongle.
Sinktel will give you contract renewal but more expensive.

Hi Nel, thanks again. I just wanna cut cost. Have called singtel before asking to terminate my residential phone line, but was told cannot cost of internet. I pay for the phone line and also internet. But that is 2 different issue. Anyway, resdiential phone line no one call in. Kind of waste money.
What is dongle?

Dongle is the USB device (stick) to connect to the mobile broadband.
oh ok thanks again...really sotong about IT.
i used to have adsl at home. i have to wait for the contract to mature before i can do anything to terminate both my phone and internet. now i am using mobile internet which is less headache for me.

If you are only using it to surf the Internet and low download, no gaming, mobile broadband is ok.
However, take note you are also competiting with mobile devices such as smart phones for the cellular data under the same provider and can be much worse than ADSL or cable.
A few of my colleagues are terminating their singtel residential phone line, including the internet line. Their reason are they work from 9 to 6, whole day not a ome, why the need of residential phone line? Just subscribe only internet line will do. But Singtel operator said cannot be done in this way.
That is what I am thinking of cancel my residential phone line + internet line too. I can actually save alot of money by converting it to mobile stick.
Mine is only for surfing, company use and those fb games. That's all.
Bte, my net book dont have any dvd writer.
So, buying a external hd or external writer is better?
How much is it cost? Min.
Without writer, I am unable to download any software in case...
What is your advise?
