Hi, I'm planning to build a website on my own but before doing that, I need to clarify some queries before the construction of my site begins. I've tried to wiki the defination for some queries I desired but to no avail. Reason is because the definations are too much in depth (I prefer layman's term) that in turn causes much confusion.
Below is my own definations in layman's term. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
What Is Domain Name? Domain is the address of my own webpage. Example http://www.ilovesgforums.com
What Is Web Hosting? It's like a server that host my website online. Whenever people type http://www.ilovesgforums.com, they'll be directed to my website and able to see all the contents in my website.
Question: I noticed that some; infact many websites offer Domain Name and Web Hosting services seperately. I'll need both the domain name as well as web hosting services in order for my website to be in full functionality mode. Am I wrong?
If I signed up for a (Domain Name & Web Hosting) package, say 1 year, does that mean my Domain Name & Web Hosting services will be terminated after 1 year should I decline to extend the services?
My Final Question: I'm just starting out so flash content, fanciful, etc.. is currently out of my radar. I wish to first build a simple, cost effective and presentable business website (<10-12 pages) on my own and the ability to update my website as and when I desire.
How much is the estimated cost to sign up for a domain name as well as web hosting services for 1 year? Below USD$50?
Any assistance here will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

If you want a ____.sg domain, visit http://www.nic.net.sg/page/accredited-registrars
For hosting, there are free hosts that supports domain names.
Thank you very much for your input.
I'd prefer not to have (.com.sg).
As for free hosts that support domain names and web hosting services, the domain name are usually like this example http://ilovesgforum.webby.com and full of 3rd party advertisments that are related to my business on the free website which is the probable reason why I'm signing up for a PAID package (Domain Name & Web Hosting).
Try http://www.zymic.com/. I use it, no forced ads, and domains available.
Hi joeyfjj, thank you very much for your input. So this website that you mentioned, it comes with Free Domain Name, Free Web Hosting, 6GB Disk Space & 50GB bandwith with no ads but the catch is http://ilovesgforum.zxq.net is an indication of free website. The www is missing and zxq.net is required to be there.
I'd like to use just http://www.ilovesgforum.com. I'm considering the use of Tripod as I'm more familiar with it. Currently I'm hosting a free web hosting there.
I can't thank you enough joeyfjj for your willingness to share. You really helped me a great deal and I appreciate it.
By the way, I saw many trash websites online that has just one page with a couple of sentences, no pictures or whatsoever and their domain name look like ie: http://www.ilovetrash.com. (Seems like a paid one to me)
Pardon my ignorance, does that mean these people actually pay for the domain name & web hosting to display some words online?

Hi Fireice, thanks for your input. I've checked the above website you mentioned. It comes with Free Domain Name and cost USD$96 per year or USD$10 per month. Quite a good deal.
One question, there are 3 places (USA, Europe & Asia) to host my website. Can I choose Europe or USA even if I'm staying in Singapore? What's the difference?
Thanks.
Go get a free domain name here , you'll get your ilovesgforums but instead of ending with .com, you'll end with .cz.cc
Then go 000webhost to host it for free.....
Lastly go stiqr to build your website....

.sg domain cost you 70$/year and requires a business license to operate IIRC
"I'll need both the domain name as well as web hosting services" Yes.
"If I signed up for a (Domain Name & Web Hosting) package, say 1 year, does that mean my Domain Name & Web Hosting services will be terminated after 1 year should I decline to extend the services?" Yes. Do note that you're free to transfer to other web hosts and domain name registrars at any time should you be unsatisfied by your current service providers.
"I wish to first build a simple, cost effective and presentable business website (<10-12 pages) on my own and the ability to update my website as and when I desire." Consider using either a blog or a Content Management System (Wordpress, Joomla, e107 etc). On most web hosts, which are running cPanel, there's a click-install feature called "Fantastico" for quick-and-easy installation of common web applications. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantastico_(web_hosting)
The only differences between free and paid web hosting services are the quality of the services and the availability of support. If you're on a free web hosting service and your website goes down one day, don't expect to receive any form of immediate support from your web host.
Ultimately, the decision to choose between either is this: Would the additional downtime of your website and lack of support cost you more than a paid web hosting service in terms of lost sales? For a small online business with a daily revenue of $1,000, even a downtime of 6 hours would result in a loss of $250 in revenue. It might not be a smart idea to go with the free option when a paid service typically cost under $20 a month. On the other hand, if you're just exploring and experimenting with the web, feel free to start out with a free web hosting service.
Another thing to note is the location of the servers. If your website is targeting visitors from a particular geographical area, it would be best to employ a hosting service of which servers are in the same area, if your budget permits, to reduce loading times for the visitors you're targeting.
As for domain names, .com's typically cost $15 to $25 a year depending on the domain name registrar you register with. As for .sg's and .com.sg's, it's typically available at $50 per year, and the latter would require proof of business registration.
