I just got back from visiting family in Singapore. My wife and I live in Boston. They are so proud and brag and trash the USA, but if Singapore is so great how come the internet is so slow? I get 25Mbps down and 15Mbps up with Verizon FIOS. The cell phone network is also pretty slow. I was only getting a couple of hundred K down on my Iphone when in Boston I get 1.6Mbps. I had fun pointing this out to them :)
I'm surprised because the infastructure in general is something to brag about. So why is the network so sloooooow?
i think Sg realize it.....now they have open net on their side...lol
Hey, you brought up good point. Connection and reception are poor here in this tiny dot island.
very simple, the internet isn't slow, it's just the isp holding back to fleece the subscribers by charging them for different tiered packages...when in fact there's no difference in cost. sadly that's how capitalism works here...but with fibre connection coming, prices are falling....

Not exactly true about the price falling. The subscription from Singnet has gone up.
No wonder the USA got trashed, its not the US of A thats short, but the TS is lacking.
I had the fastest Internet connection in the world, when I was in Japan. If US is so great, why is the Internet so slow compared to Japan?!
On topic, I think the speeds Starhub and Singtel advertise are for websites hosted on the island. When you try and access many foreign sites, there is a really big ocean or sky that the data has to travel through to get here.
boston....folks looking down on the usa??i guess its where u live.....but they wont look down if ya told them ya living in silicon valley area.
anywhere else would be like living ina cave somewhere in death valley to most singaporeans.
I smell a troll; will lock this thread if the discussion goes offtrack.
I'm not a troll. I love Singapore. Everything is better than Boston except the internet and the cell phone network. Just wondering why.
BTW the fastest average for internet speed is S. Korea 34Mbps. Japan is 18Mbps.
The Singapore avg is 5Mbps and the USA avg is 10Mbps. USA is comparable to Japan and S. Korea and obviously much slower, but given that Singapore is a city state I would have expected Singapore to be much higher on the list. Because the averages for USA, Japan and S. Korea includes rural areas. The speeds near the population centers are higher than those averages.
What do you guys get for download speeds on your smart phones? I wonder if I was getting reduced speeds because I was roaming. Although as soon as I got to Frankfurt I ran a speed test using the (speedtest.net) Iphone app and got nearly the same 1.6Mbps that I get in Boston. I was roaming there too.
Anyway like I said it was 2 to 3 hundred K down in Singapore. I was really shocked by that.
ai li huan lo?

Well sir, we do not have fiber optic networks like the United states.
Please visit Singapore back in the near future. All apartments in Singapore are in the process or have completed wiring of next Gen fiber optic boxes, and this tiny dot have just started to roll out fiber optic plans which are ranging from 100mbps to 1000mbps.
OT my internet these few days/weeks been slower than ever

mine too...very bad connection these days. even for StarHub.
Mine too, Starhub maxonline.......lots of problems accessing certain websites....sometimes it returns error / blank page, and sometimes it returns half-made page (like the page is only the basic text and jumbled graphics)
Anyone having this kind of problem?
But strangely it seems to happen only for certain websites and not for certain other websites.
I am confused.

Traffic. Its like vehicular traffic. Certain places are congested at certain times.
Certain websites are popular at certain times, and the server can handle only so many hits at that time.
sgF is one example.
About AT&T I think Verizon has been pretty successful in getting people to believe AT&T's network is much worse than their own, but I really don't see it myself. I have an AT&T Iphone and my wife has a Verizon Android (HTC Incredible) and the network coverage seems just about the same to me.
I've had an AT&T phone since 2001. Back in 2001, I was giving up something in terms of network coverage just so that I would have a gsm phone that I could use when I travel, but now in my opinion the network coverage is just as good as Verizon. I've heard that AT&T's data network is overwhelmed in New York and San Francisco, but in Boston it seems fine. Although I am thinking of switching to Verizon next year because they are rolling out their 4G network starting in Boston. I've heard that download speeds will be nearly 10Mbps. I'm also sick of Steve Jobs and his Iphone. Too many people have them now and Apple is too controlling of what I can do with my phone.
Back in 2001 the coverage in Singapore was a million times better now it's still better, but not by that much.
Cheaper, better, faster.
Oh I should have mentioned that Verizon's 4G network is GSM. I need to be able to use my phone in Singapore :) when I come to get my fill of yummy hot Thai food.
