i'm more inclined towards choosing a desktop, but i really don't know how to pick one! which brands are good, or what i should look out for and stuff.
i'd like to use it for moderate gaming, and the usual internet surfing and the like.
if non-gaming computers can support the games that i wanna play, i'd be alright with them. i don't really need everything to be 0ping and stuff. as long as i can play the game on the computer comfortably, it'd be alright
budget should be around 1k+ :) of course, the cheaper the better. where should i go to purchase it for the best bargains?

Question 1: What games do you play? We aren't psychics, you know.
Also, have a look into this thread. It has specifications and configurations of desktops for every budget.
http://sgforums.com/forums/2250/topics/394643
1) What games are you playing now and will see yourself playing in the near future.
2) Do you need to include a monitor in your budget. If yes what brand and model.
3) If you already have a monitor, what is the resolution.
hmmm looking to play dragonage, starcraft II, red alert III, assassins creed, and a few more.
how much more would a monitor cost? i'd think i want a new monitor too :P doesnt have the feel, if you stay with your current monitor, i'd think.
if you can self-assemble a PC or have friends who can do it FoC, go SLS and buy the parts. else buy from brand companies like Dell or HP. based on your games, esp the latest ones like starcraft 2:
you need:
CPU: dual core 2.4 GHz (get intel i5 or i7)
RAM: 2 GB (get 4 or 6 GB)
GPU: 512 MB Radeon 3870 or better (get a GPU with 1 GB memory)
the rest of the stuff is pretty standard: SATA hard disk (at least 256 GB), DVD writer, USB 2.0 ports, on board network port and sound card.
LCD monitor is up to you. samsung is best brand but philips oso ok.
Blatant copy-paste!
AMD Based
Athlon x4 630 3ghz + Gigabyte MA770T-Ud3P ~$308
Team Elite DDR3-1333 ~$172
Seagate/Samsung 500gb HDD ~$ 75
LG DVD Writer ~$ 35
Palit GTX460 768MB ~$299
Andyson F550 550 watts ~$ 95
Ikonik EN2 ~$79
Total ~$1064
The GTX460 is the best price-performance card around right now. You should be able to play SC2:WoL at Ultra settings smoothly on a decent screen.
A new LCD monitor will set you back about $250 for a ~20-22' monitor.
Phenom-II x2 550 + Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H : $284
Team Elite 4GB DDR3-1333 : $145
WD Green 500GB : $63
Gigabyte GTX460 768MB : $295
Samsung SATA DvD-R/RW : $30
Cooler Master 334 Casing : $62
Cooler Master GX 550W : $105
Total (without OS) = $984
where would i make these purchases?

Some suggestions for this build:
PSU : Dump the GX550W, and get something better from the likes of Andyson, Antec or Seasonic.
Casing: Dump the 334. It's a horrible case, no cable management whatsoever and stuff will look messy inside it. Get the window-less Ikonik EN2 at $69.
Other than that, seems good.

going by price ma, since TS said "cheaper the better". haha i believe for casing TS will have to choose what he will like instead of going by price.

pls dont give TS any self-build advice. it will be a disaster later on when he cannot fix problems on the comp and no one will be able to help him. at least if he buy branded PC he can get buy tech support.

He can always come here for help.
Also, branded PCs aren't bargains.
hello, i'd go with russiabear :/ dont think i'm too comfortable with building my own PC, although i can get help from you guys, i can already foresee it being quite a disaster, as i've no clue as to how to even start off.
what do you guys think about buying from this location?
"Video-Pro, Best Price or Bell System. All at level5 simlim sq."

It's not wrong to be noob at something, you just need to keep gaining experience.
If you dont even try, you will not have a clue forever.
I will say that self-built pc is the most worth already.
PcThemes at 4th floor check there out.(Disclaimer:i'm not their staff)

Comex for pre-built systems from major OEMs, those shops for regular DIY. You can ask them to assemble it for you ; Most shops do assemble the PCs for you, either for a fee or for free. Depends on the store.

Alienware..... but the price I would rather build my own PC :P
I agree with Raraken ... go for Antec Earthwatts or Seasonic...personally I'd go for Seasonic X2 750W Gold...very good efficiency and silent.
Casing Id go maybe Thermaltake Armour or Antec 9000 or forgot the midtower number...
Kind Regards
Genie
Any pros in building your own PC without buying it from Shop?
