The 8800GTX is similar, but not the same, as the 9800GTX.
Both have 128 shader units, and 24 TMUs but the 8800 has 20 ROPs, while the 9800 has only 16.
Should both be running at the same speed, the 8800 will win. However, the 8800 is clocked at 575/1350, while the 9800 is clocked in at 675/1688. This gives it a speed advantage over the 8800. I would also recommend the 9800 because it uses the "newer" G92 core, rather than the G80 of the 8800. The G92 is made on a smaller process (65nm) rather than G80's 90nm process. This means cooler cards, and more efficient ones as well. Also, G92 has the capability to accelerate Flash videos using Flash 10.1, which the G80 cannot do due to it not having support for DXVA (DirectX Video Acceleration)
Performance wise, reviews should have benchmarks for Crysis, but you will have to compare performance for BC2 with similar cards. 8800GTX ~ 9800GTX, so you can compare game performance like they were the same cards.
Well I changed over to 9800GTX when my 8800GTX is dead...
IMHO, I think the 9800 is faster when playing games... I've tried on supreme commander and DOW2...
However as for the being cooler part, my 9800 does not last as long as my 8800 though >___> My 9800 has officially kicked the basket since last week and I'm actually looking for a replacement...
EDITED: I tried both games on HIGHest since I'm also on win7... I do not hear any complains from my bro playing bad company 2 though...

Got $400, go for HD5850. Big improvement over the 9800.
Got $300, go for HD5770. HD5830 not that worth it at this price point right now. If price drops then its good.
Got $200, then you best hope still got HD4850 out there somewhere.
My X1900XT from 2006 still going strong, can play BC2, Borderlands etc.
My 8800GTX 3 yrs liaw still functioning according to specifications.
N graphics loooks good. I wonder with the new graphic cards out now... will make me cream my panties or not.
Hmmm i guess i'll stick with it for the time being. But if i overclock i'll be able to get 9800GTX results?
