it doesnt even explain the reason for the failure.

What is last date of your virus signatures? Maybe its updated already, hence it failed.

Well, my NOD32 doesn't let me update if it detects the signatures are up to date.

if so, why does it still ask me to update?

Seriously I have no idea, if i come across a system running norton antivirus, first thing I do is shut it down, second thing is to uninstall it.
I cancelled my norton, makes a pc start up very slow.
Now using free online avg and malware and spybot.
But wonder wether it can detect any new virus or not.
:(
Norton..... slows your com, fanciful update screen. Ability to remove virus = mediocre
Try nod32, light weight antivirus
Any comments on Kapersky, avast, avira ?
I'd go for Avast Home Edition. It's very lightweight, but pretty good. Use in tandem with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and a good firewall program.

Avast is good. I'm using it too, after i got fed up with AVG...
I use windows security essentials with Malware-Bytes
Cheap, not really heavy on resources and dare to say so far, effective.
Far better than it's predecessor, the Windows live one care (Which has a paid subscription)
Sometimes I wonder if we are being taken for a ride by these anti virus companies with their paid subscriptions.
i using norton now
got so lousy meh???
