My laptop always hangs whenever I use it for a while. It didn't happen before but now it is happening. It loads slowly too. I don't know why though. Is it because of a virus?
Laptop specs:
AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology 1.83GHz
1GB Ram
now min. 2 gb ram lah.
If it is running vista, i would say that 1gb ram is too little. 2gb would be minimum, and 4gb would be the best. Try not to run more than 3 programs at once.
Virus could be adding to the problem. i would suggest you use kaspersky. quick scan everyday, full scan once a week.
You might want to check if you have installed or downloaded any programs recently.

I am running Windows 7. There used to be no problem but suddenly it started to act up. I had a scan and there wasn't any virus detected. The only program I installed is Roller Coaster Tycoon 1. I'm planning to install Windows XP in my laptop, is it a good idea?
I have a feeling that it is a combination of ram, processor speed and maybe overheating
Which version of windows 7 are you using?
1GB is not really enough for applications nowadays, unless you are running basic stuff like word, powerpoint(with little pictures)
Have you tried to set your power settings to "High Performance" instead of "Power saver"?

Windows 7 Home Premium. I will try later. Can't be overheating, it happens also when I start it after standby.
even for win 7, i would recommend 2gb ram. if you are planning to overwrite win 7 with vista, its fine, provided you laptop specs can support. but dont have both 7 and xp together as it will only slow down you lappy.

What I was thinking was installing over 7, not dual booting.
I thought Aero was the problem so I decided to use Basic Aero.
Not overheating - If it was overheating, it would instantly shut down.
Started loading slowly recently? More likely a virus - or a failing HDD.
Now the laptop doesn't hang with Basic Aero, but I can't comfirm that this solves the problem. My laptop hangs whenever it loads a lot of stuff. (Eg: I load a internet browser, then I suddenly load powerpoint then a media player like WMP.) Could be HDD failling...
It could have been a virus. Now decided to install Windows XP. See if the problem(s) persist.
Slow start up... as in window start up loading screen? Or after u login window then long start up?
If its the first, ur HDD dying...
If it's the latter, ur lappy might be infected with spywares/adwares... go clean them...
Btw, ur title kinda funny, "Laptop keeps hanging unexpectedly"... does laptop hangs expectedly???
Sounds like my 3 year old acer pc, just freezes up sometimes, worst case is BSOD, then cannot start up at all, then pull out the plug, take out the casing, adjust the ram modules, then ok again, then repeat story.
I always remind myself to backup the HDD, but cannot be bothered. Luckily my WoW is installed in the other computer.

Now fixed liao when XP installed. Probably viruses.
