Hi all! I'm using a HP Pavillion dv1000 laptop which was purchased in 2006. The operating system used is the Windows XP Home Edition.
I experienced the following problem since last Monday:
The Problem
When I restarted my laptop after it lagged for some time, the following error appeared:
"A disk read error occured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"
I tried restarting it several times and when I nearly managed to restart it in a different way, a screen with the following appeared:
"We apologise for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully..." with five options, of which three are to start in Safe Mode, one is to use the "Last Known Good Configuration" and the last to "Start Windows Normally".
Regardless of which of the five options I used, I was returned with a BSOD after the splash screen which contained the error of 'UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_ERROR'.
The technical information read:
*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x86567900, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Recovery
Following the BSOD which I got (Unmountable Boot Error), I went to google the term and arrived at this website (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555302).
Subsequently, I followed the steps as listed on the website. However, after typing the 'chkdsk /r' command, I was returned with the error of "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."
The alternative listed on the website is to use the 'fixboot' command, but I'm not sure if this could work. What exactly does the 'fixboot' command do, and will it wipe out my private data? Or are there any other suggestions which can help to restore my windows and yet not lose my private data?
Thanks.
Sounds like your hard drive died. No more warranty, so I would suggest getting a 2.5" laptop hard drive and replace the hard drive. Or rather, some sections of the drive are damaged (crashing head, warped platters etc.)
What you can do is purchase a 2.5" SATA HDD enclosure, and attempt to access the hard drive on another PC.
access your bios, and do a hard disk diagnostic.
If all tests fail, your hard drive died on you.
HDD fail.
Probably too mny bad sectors/stuck head.
Is the laptop exposed to impact often?
If yes, repeated impact causes many bad sectors and damages the platters.
