i want to know how to create a movie disc that can be played on DVD/CD player. for example, if i have a random .avi video file, how can i burn it onto a disc that works on such players? any recommended programs that are user-friendly? i've tried many times and have always ended up failing, resulting in a few DVD-R's becoming useless. sigh.
of cos now i use DVD-RW's. thanks for any help
A DVD burning software should have an option to allow you to create a video disc. If you simply burn it as data, the AVI file can only be read by newer DVD players that are able to handle digital file formats. Do note that a video DVD can store up to 120 minutes of video only.
shouldn't the amount of video play you can store increase if the quality of the video decreases? any DVD burning freeware i could use?

That is if you're burning it as a data DVD. You may want to try out CDBurnerXP and use this guide:
