why Inches, not Centimetre?

I was wondering why laptop/nettop screens are measured in inches and not centimetres?
A space satellite once crashed because of confusion over the use of different measures....

for the sake of international uniformity.. even our pants is in inches, but sadly, most measurements differ, inches foots stones, meters,
even the chinese measurements differs from those use in singapore -
like why can't we all speak one language, eh?

No idea why. Maybe inches sounds more 'powerful' and'bigger'

Why not just call up the screen manufacturers and ask them instead? I'm locking up this topic for now. Let us know once you got your answer from them. =)
