Need help with my HP Pavillion Laptop (3yrs old) which is hanging/lagging every 5 mins or so.. Have ran several virus scans and did not locate anything major. Any advice or repair referrals which is of reasonable price..
Any help will be appreciated.
Have u tried reformatting n reloading the os?
No I havent tried both. The reason being im not sure how to back-up my files and data. its very important that i dont loose them.

Erm...just copy the important documents to a thumbdrive? Or is there any applications on the computer of which configuration must be backed up as well?
Buy a 3.5" usb external casing + drive and dump every files, data, video clip etc into the new drive.
Check that you have completely moved all your impt things into the new drive before the formatting.
Also, if you were to follow the step by 4sg, take note of the applications you use. I always have a hard time remembering what applications (firefox plugins ect) I used to use, after i reformat. (:
edit: too drowsy, what happened to my tenses and grammer?
xxclone would be a good backup utility software..

true true
it happens to me also
Had a similar thing happen to me with my Compaq. Would ask the check disk for errors, and hang. Skip, and would hang 5 mins later. Turns out the drive failed.
To see if it is software problem or HDD problem,
On booting up the PC, as soon as the manufacturer logo appears, press Del, F10 or whatever other combo that might be used to enter BIOS
Next, Scan through each tab until you see one that refers to the hard drive. Press enter if able. If it is about boot preferences, wrong one. If it says S.M.A.R.T support or something, you got it. Most, if not all, recent hard drives support SMART. Run the self-test. If it fails, your HDD spoilt.
Not very clear instructions. If you need clearer guides, PM me. I will try and form a guide for you.
