Hi, whenever I start any games, I get horrible lag(FPS lag I think) for a while(1-2 minutes) and then it ran fine afterwards. May I know what's the cause of it and how can I fix it?
My comp specs is:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ 2.20Ghz
2.00GB RAM
ATI Radeon X1550 Graphics Card.
I don't play very high graphics games on this computer too.
I know that this graphic card is very old. But it can still handle CoD5.
set to low quality?

Hi SpicedUp,
Your game is probably still loading during that 1~2 minutes, even though it has already started. Don't worry too much about it unless you are into competitive gaming.
Cheers.
Erm... If that is true then my gaming computer would be lagging at the start too. But I don't experience that.
wa 2 GB RAM com will lagg?!?!?!? my com not gaming only starting enter rm lagg only for FPS somemore my com 1 GB RAM and 580GB for memory
and i plae dota also will not feel lagg except when the host or other player paper com
At the start of the game lag only... BTW I tried to switch with my spare Nvidia 8400GS Graphics Card also no luck.
It could be your processor that is bottlenecking
8400gs is not a bad card, and it should take the cod5 without much trouble(of cos not at the maximum setting)
u can try to set the resolution lower.
Background running programs or viruses will take up ram, and that will cause lag
2gb is enough, so i think the problem may lies with your processor or background programs
I have 160GB HDD with around 105GB free space. That should be enough.
I only have MSN and ATI Catalyst Control Center running in the background but I usually close that both.
My other computer doesn't experience this though.
update ur graphics card?
It is already up-to-date.
Pillow has said it.

When it's lagging like crap, try to Alt+Tab if possible and look at the Processes tab of the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and sort the processes in descending order of CPU usage. If you see your game processes using 100% or close to that, you would probably realize why it's lagging.

kk.. Opened a game and minimize it. There's only 1 process that the CPU usage is close to 100... lol
BTW, the game process hides itself to "protect" from hackers(yes, it's a crappy online game).

Try leaving the Task Manager open before you start the game and during the laggy period, look at the CPU usage graphs under the Performance tab to see if the graph line stays at the ceiling for a considerable amount of time (plateau). Also, as I'm not sure whether hidden processes are accounted for their CPU usage, can you try this on other games instead?
Your CPU is a single-core right? It's the older 939 version, IIRC. The memory used is the slower DDR memory, if I'm not mistaken. I am thinking that during the first 1-2 mins, the system is loading the resources to RAM, and that the slower RAM cannot buffer fast enough. Then the game has to load textures and stuff from the slower HDD instead of the RAM for a while until the RAM has the textures and resources.
@Raraken
When I first bought this computer, it has only a 70GB HDD and 1GB of RAM and has no lag at all while starting the game. At sometime, the hard disk fails on me so I had to switch to a 160GB one. I update all my drivers and tried starting a game(to see if it works). It lag for the first few minutes. Then I installed another 1GB of RAM. That makes it 2GB. But no luck at all.
