Hi,
I wish to get a PSP for my niece. What is the latest model? Where can I get the best offer? I had seen users seeing movies on their PSP. Do I have to modify the PSP? Where can I do so? If the PSP is still warranty, can I modify it?
Please advise. Thanks.

latest model is the PSPGo. but its not out in singapore stores yet. so now its the PSP-3000. Best to buy at funan digital mall. lots of shops that price it at 220+. you can even bargain for it if you are good :) . you can ask them to modify to custom firmwares and such to do more stuff on the psp. of course, it requires money to do so.
all the best finding it :)
'modify to custom firmware' is a euphemism for 'hack'
ha.
please. 3/4 of PSP users are using custom firmwares. i bet you do. if you dont, you're missing out alot of things.
advantage of custom(hacked) firmware
1 - sony firmware sucks
2 - using UMD drain battery
3 - UMD damage from wear&tear and the casing cracked too easily
4 - can use 'trainers'
5 - can fit alot of games into 1 16GB memory stick (= 12-18 UMDs)
6 - 1 memory stick less than 1/10 volume of 1 UMD
7 - can play ripped PSX games (meaning if you got the PSX game disc, you can rip out the game data into the PSP to play)
best of all, pirated games are free
To TS
1 - Latest models are non-modable
2 - Non-modable sets price are quite standard, stick to sony shops to avoid being con
3 - Certain video formats are viewable without modding
4 - cost of modding usually about $15-$20
5 - modable sets are usually alot more expensive
6 - do not trust vendors who say they are selling modable sets but they dont do the modding, usually they lie and are actually selling non-modable sets
7 - sony says warranty void if it is modded but most modding is just firmware(software) based, so in the event there is a need to send it in for warranty repair, just install back sony official firmware.
