my sis has a laptop and my living room has a PC.
the PC is a connected to a cable modem, starhub maxonline broadband subscription.
if we buy those standard wireless router, then do we have to configure those messy and complex IP address, DNS stuff?!
we're thinking of buying a router but really not sure how to set it up.
for those who have router, is it tough to setup? those manuals are impossible to understand if you don't have a CCNA cert.

isn't really that difficult to setup la...u have to install the drivers all these and that..just connect the LAN cable from the cable modem to the router's in port. then u'll also have to setup a password for ur router for the excryption for the network..DNS and IP will be automatically done itself.
just follow the wizard guide. it will make things easier to configure.
dont need setup anything for my
just connect cables can alr.
thanks!
so, no need to call Starhub and ask them for those messy account configuration details like what DNS numbers, subnet mask or stuff?
thanks!

of course you won't need.
I'm now linking both my laptop and PC to the same modem, so I got a router and connect as follows:
-Modem connect to router (WAN port)
-PC connect to router (LAN port #1)
-Laptop connect to router (LAN port #2)
The thing is, when I try to load websites, there's always a error (due to no connection detected!!!).
Hardware wise, I'm very sure everything is connected properly.
I went to the router's setup page (that http://192.168.1.1 thing) and there's a ton of rocket-science fields I need to fill up?
Like Host domain, host name, MAC address and all that rot (I really do not have CCNA or Masters in Computer Science).
Do you guys encountered the same problem? I wonder if I need to ask StarHub for all these data, because there's a lot.
I also tried to find out the details of my network by running ipconfig in the Start > Run menu but the DOS window open and closed automatically in 1 second. :(
Pls advise. I also wonder if anyone here provides router setup service, then maybe we can discuss.
Thanks!
my modem is the motorola black one that stands up vertically.
not at home now so i can't check...but it was installed earlier this year by a Starhub technician.
the router is called TrendNet TEW-411BRP Wireless AP router (not those common Linksys ones).
the modem should be connected to the web (all lights working), and the router also properly setup (able to access router's setup page).
i'll check again in the router setup page for something like DHCP setting, heard others on other forum talk about this.
btw, after this whole thing is setup, my laptop can go wireless and no need forever connect to the router right?
Thanks a lot, everyone! My utmost gratitude! It is with everyone's help that I managed to setup my router effortlessly!
One more question: Is there a way to surf the web on my netbook without connecting to the router? (that's what i bought wireless router for).
I've tried unplugging the ethernet cable from the netbook and it doesn't work anymore; must connect to router by wire then can.
Do I need to change anything? On my router setup page, there's all these fields:
Wireless
MAC Address: 00:90:4B:88:55:F0
Mode: 11b+G (btw, what's this?)
Domain: ETSI
Channel: 6
SSID: diverx
SSID Broadcast: Enabled
Security: Enable
Pls advise!
i once have the exact problem as you!
tried many ways to solve it.
but in the end, it was solved by itself.
suddenly, all coms connected can browse

Save the thanks; I haven't done anything yet.
As for options for the wireless network:
Leave the mode as "b+g" for backward compatibility or set it to "g" if you're sure that your wireless adapters are all 802.11g (b is really old though).
Channel number doesn't really matter unless you're running more than one wireless networks in close proximity. Think of it as the frequency channels used by radio stations. Eg. Two radio stations can't use the same frequency of 92.4 Mhz unless they're located far apart, otherwise they would interfere with each other's signals.
Leave domain as ETSI, which allows you to choose between Channel 1 - 13 (FCC allows Channel 1 - 11).
SSID: Your network name, which will appear in a list of wireless networks when a user within the range of your router is trying to connect to a wireless network. You can try setting something funky there, like:
SSID Broadcast: whether to broadcast your network name in public. I've never used this option before, but I assume that:
1. Your SSID will not appear in wireless network lists.
2. Users who want to connect to your wireless network will need to enter the network name manually.
Just leave it enabled but make sure you set a password for your wireless network, which leads us to...
Security: Leave it enabled. It probably means whether a password is required to connect to your wireless network (though it's pretty ambiguous to just call it "Security"). There's probably a password field or two just nearby that option where you'll enter the network password. There might be a restriction which requires the password to be at least 8 characters long as well.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
thanks a lot latecomerx!
one more thing: in order for my LG netbook to surf the net via the router *wirelessly*, got people say i must enable / turn on my "wireless adapter" in my netbook.
anyone knows roughly how to "turn on this wireless adapter"?
if people here uses netbooks to surf via router wirelessly, pls let me know how u turn on the "wireless adapter" so i can try myself. Netbook model may be different but at least i may get some ideas.
pls advise! :-)
hi,
need some help again.
router is working (via wired connection) and i've found my wireless adapter on my netbook.
last problem is now configuring wireless access.
i still don't quite understand the wireless part.
can someone provide some simple short steps on how to configure netbook for wireless access? like, 1st step need to turn on wireless adapter, 2nd step .....
my main problem is how to detect available wireless routers around my area so that i can connect netbook wirelessly to router etc.
thanks a lot!
What i understand is, you would just need to
I did that for my Apple Airport extreme router + linksys router.
