Considering you integrated GPU, the cooling system in yours is probably not as powerful as those in entertainment-class laptops.
Starcraft 2 will definitely run on your X3100.
As for why you aren't into Gaming Laptops, I can see why, but my laptop has decent specs and it never gets hot, even if I play CPU/GPU intensive games which go at like 100% load.
My laptop:
Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz
4GB DDR3
320GB HDD
14' LED screen (1366x768)
GeForce G105M
Battery life: At least 3 hours on a 6-cell, reaching 4.5hrs at maximum.
The only thing that ever gets hot is the HDD, and even then, its not that hot.
Even the mobile Core 2 Quads (Q9000) doesn't get that hot, and my laptop can actually support one (Both Power, Thermal and chipset) The advances in technology are astounding. You will be surprised at what Intel/AMD are creating.
Nvidia is quite reliable; The only problems they faced were with the 8400M/8600M series GPU, and those are seriously outdated, so the new laptops are alot better, IMO, considering my friend's laptop gets hot enough to cook nasi lemak/fried chicken/roti prata/some persons balls/whatever.
If i upgrade to quad core, will gaming performance be better?

You upgrade to quad-core, answer is: No.
The game will still be bottlenecked by your GPU. You may have a blazing fast CPU,but your GPU will pull you down, unless you upgrade to a mid-range GPU.
ok thanks...but isnt it possible to run the game on the quad core cpu alone? if u disable the intel gfx?

Nope. The CPU doesn't have the capabilities to run the graphics. Like say you just installed the OS again. You scroll window damn lag right? That is because your CPU is the one doing the work cause the GPU no driver to allow proper functionality.
I tried on my desktop with fresh install last time. Plus, you cannot disable the GPU, cause you disable, like handicapping your com. The chipset wont allow. Mobile chipset got a few. Those with integrated graphics, and those without. Those with integrated graphics usually used in the cheaper laptops and they don't have the capabilities for graphics cards. (This one I read and inferred from Intel documentation, so may be abit off). You disable, how to play game?

there are software out there which can make a game not check for GFX card when installing

Yeah, but A good GPU is as important as the CPU.
For experiments, I actually took out my GeForce card, and used the integrated GPU to play.
Comparisons: Q6600 2.4GHz Quad-core, 2GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
Crysis @ 1024x768, Everything set to High
Using dedicated 9500GS 512MB : 34~53FPS
Using integrated NVidia GeForce 6150 384MB? : Would not run correctly, even at menu
Maplestory
9500GS : 100+ FPS, Like ~150
6150: 40~50 FPS (Weird, but I dunno why)
Team Fortress 2 @ 1440x900, everything on High
9500GS : 42~204FPS
6150 : Crash at 3D
Live for Speed @ 1440x900
9500GS : 67.5~102.3
6150: 11.8~19.0
All tests were standardised, Same settings, on Vista SP1 'Gamers Edition' (Vista without the crap)
So you can see, You aren't getting good framerates with any game, even though I am running a quad-core set-up. No matter how powerful the CPU, the GPU will always pull you down.
If you wanted to know, I could do the test because I'm in the midst of changing my GPU, 9500 to HD4770.
