I have a bone to pick with starhub now. I've done a series of tests using speedtest.net with undesirable results. All along I've been talking to call centre technical staff that said it was ok to use it. And now a guy comes along that argues with me and say that speedtest.net not accurate, must use utilities.starhub.com to check instead cuz the network is running on starhub.
Ok so I did a check with utilities.starhub.com and i got a top speed attained of 9mbps when I had only a speed of 1-3mbps (my plan is 8mbps) in speedtest most of the time.
2 questions here:
-Is speedtest.net really not accurate?
-Wouldn't speed be obviously faster when i run a check using starhub website? Therefore explaining the jump in speed to 9mbps? The thing is, i can't possibly be surfing only starhub website the whole day right.
By the way this is the record of my netspeed using speedtest.net:
Using wired by the way
surprise !

Is your internet connection secure? Is there someone else tapping into your network, causing you to lag like crazy?
i believe starhub had said that a boost of certain speed when visiting their site / partner site.
i would rather take speedtest.net as it is not service provider biased =)
Ar u using a wireless router? Try securing ur network. Or u ar using some peer to peer software to download stuff off the net? In this case u have to limit ur upload speed.
As you can see, I have shown that IE 7 is slower than Google Chrome when testing the speed at www.speedtest.net
Therefore in order to remove all doubts, you should get a friend with superior hardware and OS to connect to your cable modem and do the tests. Best is, that the "test laptop" is running on starhub cable at the owner's own home. This will ensure that as far as possible, you are comparing apples with apples.
This will put to rest all concerns that it is not because your computer is at fault.
For example, even if your computer's hardware is superior, maybe malware is slowing you down.
You need to remove the wireless capabilities of your router/modem (if possible) and to ensure that it is not due to malware and underperforming computer to be sure.
it depends on your location. you can try relocating your modem to another location. (signal strength)
Wireless? Wired? Flash version? Browser version?
All counts into SpeedTest's tests results.
use singtel
.
.
that starhub employee is talking crap.
which idiot would trust an indication that they put on their website to test the internet speed for their service provided.obviously it's going to be inflated....
The speed varies on different times of the day. so there are many many diff results.
To the people that ask me whether I use wired or wireless. I'm using a wired connection through a router. Before you say that there's anything wrong with my router, I did connect the lan cable directly to my modem and the speed is still as slow as ever

Whenever I did these tests, the only window I have opened is speedtest.net. And I hardly do p2p at all.

I thought it was already mentioned that I've already talked with people on their end? It's just that they die die refuse to say that there is a problem with my connection. When it's pretty obvious on my side cuz I also got do online gaming and you can see a difference when you play with other singaporeans at times. (assuming that speedtest.net is not accurate, which i doubt)

Yes I know there would be different results during different times of the day. The thing is how can I lag behind so much in terms of net speed when you compare to other singaporeans with same isp? Not to mention I sub for 8mbps, I expect at least a minimum of 4mbps no matter what time it is. Going all the way less than 1mbps is too much.
