Will reformatting your laptop remove all the virus/spyware that existed in your computer without you knowing it?
Reformat means delete all and install
so everything from the drive u are reformating, including ur photoes etc, will be deleted.
it's a way.
Thanks MyPillowTalks and kenn3th.
If i back up my stuff in an ext hdd then reformat my laptop. Then put the stuff in the ext hdd back to the laptop. Would that work? Or is there a chance of the virus/spyware gets backed up too and go back to my computer..
Sorry I know this question might be sound abit stupid for all the IT experts here. I'm just a noob who requires help.
Some viruses can auto spread to external things. So you might get or might not. That depends on what virus
copy out all your stuffs to external hard disk.
reinstall your os and install anti virus and anti spyware.
scan your external hard disk.
copy back all your stuffs.
that should be safe enough.
i m under an agreement that i can't comment on such issues. =) sry.
refer to replies above =)
load with a clean boot disc/drive and reformat is the best.
Technically, yes. However, some are not so easy to solve.
Another thing. If you get file infectors (Virut, Sality, etc) , backing up your files, especially .EXE files are not recommended. They are not called file infectors for nothing.
PWNED32 also has another valid point, but that's easy to solve.

Thanks guys for all the comments.
I scanned my computer for viruses/spyware but I found none. But I sent an email to an external agency and the person actually said theirs system scanned and found that my excel file was infected.
Next thing is that, when I tried to go to google website and tried googling something. It prompted me that my search seems like something that came from a spyware or something like that. Then I did my scan again, and yet, I found nothing again.
What could be wrong? I'm using trendmicro to scan.

thanks, ndmmxiaomayi
Its my own file. I wonder why it was affected as well. And I've got no idea how did virus got transmitted through the excel file that I attached and tried sending through an email.
nenepokey: is that Avast free or something? trendmicro is in my computer by default. its really not that good?
Do you use macros? Did you open somebody's file before (any MS Office document) ? Do any others know how to use macros?
