Try uninstalling AVG first and see whether the situation improves.

i got the same problem with my vista laptop. processor at 50-90% on idle.
i manage to do a work around by disabling my network before i shutdown
apparently, there is something on my laptop that eats processor power when it detect a network on start up so i disable network connections on start up and wait a few minutes after start up then manually enable my network.
or
it could be the vista file indexing thing eating your processor power.
look for a guide to disable vista's file indexing function

I had a laptop which I used intensively for software developement for eight years, it was still working very nicely even during the period when I decided to sell it.
I think you should check your hard disk condition. Perhaps you have been moving the laptop around even when it is powered on and hence increased its wear and tear.
Every tried defragmenting your laptop too?

Depending on the amount of files and segments. It could take half a day or a day itself.

I would not use the word sluggish. Basically, I got all your problems plus something extra. My cursor run amok.
Tried everything. Finally, I discovered that the software Adware itself is the source of the problem.
I think the version I dl is a modified one. I dl from a forum site, so ppl may have changed some of its algorithms. So be careful of the source of software dl. -

What to do, shut the whole thing down and start all the applications again.

the problem was never solved
ccb mobtv
then mayi also disappear ler
so i lan lan bought a new pc
spent about $1100
but it can flyyyyyyyy and i nvr look back
(lappie still can use
sometimes i on both comp and lappie)conclusion:
it's time some $$$ is flying
off your pocket
but now $1K oredi can get you good stuffdun bother repair lah

i got company laptop n also a desktop at home. so my personal laptop is not that important. dont feel like investing to get a new one.
see how la. who knows by next pc show i will be tempted with their offers. :P

move yr document to save place than reformat n install yr os (ie yr window) everything should be ok.....

than u hav to install virus scan n other removal sw.....
but make sure from reliable source....
if no
than yr os has become patchy....
