got your enrollment package alr?
I think the answer is pretty obvious, regardless what course you are in, which would be Acer Aspire 4930G.
Reasons is simple:
Therefore, my recommedation would be Acer Aspire 4930G. However, do note that whatever notebook you decides on, please extend the warranty to cover 3 years (which is the duration of time you needed to complete your diploma).
No matter how well you protect your laptop, it will definitely give you problems (e.g. casing problem, screen problem, motherboard spoil, ram spoil, graphic card spoil) that require you to visit their service centre.
If you only buy 1 year warranty and its expired, good luck to you, its gonna cost more than that $200-300 bucks that your saved for not extending the warranty to 3 years and this is especially true if you are unlucky and need to visit the service centre frequently (for like 2-3 times per year) or if your motherboard/graphic card spoil/Screen spoil.

Not yet =/ hahas.
They still selling the old models? omg....!
I recommend you to buy outside.
Get a lightweight one...carrying a 2kg++ laptop is tedious. And probably 1 with a decent graphics card to let you play game.
i have gone to the maritime school before, it's cool.
Rp's package is better.
Lol. hahas but its much mroe cheaper thank outside, my budget isnt much =//

i fried my dv2000 hdd in an aircon condition .darn
on the whole, Hp/compaq laptops are alright.
No Acer laptops pls. Looking at the condition of my Fujitsu and my friends' Acer, theirs are in much worse condition compared to mine. Acer use cheap parts and tend to spoil easily. The battery won't last.
Y_Shun's Notebook guideline
- Lightweight [recommend: 12~13inch because screen resolutions are still 1280x800]
A decent 14" laptop will weight around 2kg~
However, bringing a laptop + books will be a large amount of weight for you and your bag! Especially if you travel to school by bus... imagine carrying a bag of over 2kg during the peak hours, its not light, mind you!
Ignore if you do not need to bring books. [RP students]
- Graphics Card [recommend: NVDIA, ATI; hate: Intel!]
During your poly time, there are sure to be 1to2hrs of free time, during this free time, it will be time for you and your classmates to have mini-lan sessions, especially for guys....so a good graphics card is necessary to play games such as Left4Dead, COD etc etc.
- Battery Life
If theres an option to get higher battery life, probably consider for it only if its within your budget. You wouldn't want to hunt around for power socket.
- Matt Screen
Find matte screen computers like Fujitsu/Toshiba because glossy screens usually makes it harder for your eyes with reflections on it.
Lastly...its design!
- Find a cool stylish design notebook for yourself and take good care with it. This thing will be your pencil box for years to come, so take good care for it :D
Remember to purchase 3years warranty. :)

Acer Gemstones giving a different impression now... in my class of Acer and HP/Compaq laptops...
HP/Compaq fared badly! 1 dv6000 had a screen leak within 6months of use? and they claimed it was out of warranty until my friend kbkp and they waive it off.
And its my case of Compaqv3700 with software problem, then motherboard and finally LCD screen.
For now, the Acer Gemstones worked pretty well...no body went to Service Centre yet... the most they did was reformat.
Anyway. 2009 road show offers are not up yet.
Ts took the 2008 offers and posted it here.

You're probably right. Hopefully the new Acer Gemstones can live up to its expectations.. But I will choose Fujitsu for sturdyness, HP (not Compaq) for the entertainment centre functions.
