Hi all,
Im using a GeForce 6600. Had downloaded pc wizard and this is what i have;
I'm playing a game that is needing a 256mb g.card but i tried to run it anyway with my 660 128mb. after about 30mins of game play, i refreshed it's temp;
Before:
GPU Temp
What game you playing? Also, it might not be your Memory size. Most nVidia cards can use System RAM as Supplemental Video RAM (Or TurboCache). ATi uses HyperMemory. I have a feeling its due to insufficient cooling? Could you open up DXDiag and tell us the video memory? If it really is 128MB, I don't think that game should even run properly.
not sure where to get the video memory, i've took a ss from dxdiag.
as for my ram, its 2 X 512 ddr2 5200.
the game's Devil May Cry 4 windows version. took it from my friend and tried playing it knowning my com didn't met the minimun.
at the lowest graphic setting ingame, it run smooth enough @ 30 fps. so my only concern is my g.card will get fried =\?

Think is airflow problem, try opening the case to allow better airflow...
Ambient 71 degrees is scary... try cleaning the GPU fan as well, dust usually collects there... like all fans... if ur card is working overtime to play that game then it might be close to max 'output' liao... got money switch cards?
if still cannot work then open up ur pc n cool it using those house fan lor... too much heat can screw up ur gpu, depending how long u left it at what temp...
on the first night i tried the game, i played for 1hour until got burning smell coming from my cpu.. got super freaked out and faster off power and open up.
the rest is still okay, warm warm not super hot kind. only my g.card is super hot. so i suspect my card can't take it liao >_<
since then, i've left the casing opened. been like 1week since the burning smell. i checked the gpfan not realli jialet leh
anyway, sometime i die die wanna chiong the game, i assume when my gpcard is dying, my com will freeze. i ever encounter green squares poping around the screen, followed by graphic lags and finally everything paused.
and erm.. bo lui ah!!! cannot get a job still. changing a card sounds like a dream............ zzzzz

Erm... there's ur answer? Anyways, corrupted display is commonly one of the signs of dying gpu... but if u still can play with it that means it's damaged...
if u dont mind, u can get some of the cheaper cards from ati or nvidia, like 9400gt or HD36xx from ati... about $100, can play relatively alot of games older than 1y.o, but cny coming, sure got ang bao 1...
but its only while playing dmc4, the display goes sot sot one.
i suppose my card is dying.. and if i play dmc4 its pushing it too hard in this case mah?

Yes, when you start seeing weird things on your screens (they're called artifacts), your card is overheating. Maybe cleaning up the dust around the GPU fan would help a little?

eh.. but even i just on my com, the temp is quite high already leh.
not too sure about this, need advise.
but anyway the conclusion is that my card already wanna up car liao. best is to change a new one right? T_T

60 is fine. Read more about it here:

from the yahoo link.. i assume my temp is okay but the signs of 'artifacts' and freezes is telling me its time for a songka for my card hor?

No, it just means you're overheating your card, unless you're seeing artifacts even when your card is relatively cool.
my casing is left opened, and the gp fan isn't really dirty.
on normal usage (animation, playing d2 or cs) its okay.. no problem at all.
so its still points back to the DMC4 game?
whenever i play dmc4, i can really feel the heat growing higher and higher at my feet. on normal usage the heat isn't that power yet
my ati card has the same probs.. gta iv makes the whole lower part of my legs feel like they're wrapped in blankets
ya.. always keep the feets warm :D
sian la.. got nice game cannot enjoy it. sucks

Nah, ati's cards are usually like that... then again, maybe i'm someone who like the card running cool...

I'd suggest the 9500GT instead. The 9400GT is less powerful than the 6600GT IIRC. the 9500GS (which sucks) is about 20% faster than the 8600GTS, which was quite powerful.

D2 or CS isnt as graphically taxing on the video card as DMC4, so yes, running the game probably is stressing your card and the memory modules on the crad.
ATi cards do have a problem of overheating or being quite hot. Take their 3870X2, it was so hot they had to underclock it even with the reference cooler. The 4870s are also quite hot, but not as hot.
Tell u what, the 6600 ain't made to play current high intensive graphics game. When u force the older card to play, u actually stress it. This causes overheating as the card tries to work harder. If you don't want your 6600 to die, stop playing DMC4. If you want to play it, u might have to change several parts of your computer.
To Raraken, the 4870s and 3870s are made to withstand the high temps (checked from several reviews)
i just hit a new record.. its 129 degree 5mins ago hahahaha!
ya.. i think i'll stop playing till i have the cash to change a new card.
hope my interview tml goes well! woohoo!
oh and many thanks to you people who replied and took time to help ;)
cheers!
