others all windows vista now
dun dumb dumb get XP
everyone use vista, den use vista
I would rather get XP than Vista, but microsoft gonna end the support for it, so you don't really have a choice, do you?
Plus, I doubt you can request for XP from the supplier now.

im going sec 4 nxt yr, and i wana buy a laptop soon, and i am planning to use it in poly, however, i have a few questions, hope u can answer me.
1) poly and own laptop got what difference?
2)isit like for some poly got certain software that only that particular poly's laptop has?
3) do u have friends who didnt buy the laptop from the poly fair? can u tell me about how they 'worked' the laptop to suit the school's requirements and stuff?
thanks.
P.S maybe wrong section to post lol.
1. Specs difference. Each and every laptop model got different specs. Also price difference. Same model in school tends to cost less than when you buy outside.
Also, everything is pre-configured for school lappies. Outside lappies need to bring to school to configure. While you think you save time queuing in school, you end up waiting for more days to configure a laptop.
2. Yes, if the school needs certain customized software. For RP, students and teachers have a customized software called UT Client, which is for taking tests. Teachers don't take tests, they use this client to generate a unique key so that students can log in to a server. Also, this client enables them to mark the tests.
Your school will let you know if such a customized software is needed.
3. Bring to school to configure, especially if they need to connect to a domain. That one has no choice. Only the domain administrator can add you in to the domain.
Alright, my sis got her lappie at SP for 1.3-1.4k.
Specs:
2.26GHz Core 2 Duo
3GB or RAM
160GB of HDD space, I think
And probably what I would always love in a lappie.......
A Dedicated GPU.
ATi Radeon Mobility HD2400XT with 256MB of RAM. Think is DDR2.
This was about a year back, I think, so for the same price, you should be able to get a better lappie.
Answers to most of your questions:
1. Your school will sell the laptops at cheaper prices, say, around $300 cheaper? They also will give you a bundle or a package along with the lower price. For example, at NUS IT Coop, an Acer 4930G with 2.53GHz C2D, 4GB of RAM, 512MB 9300M GS goes for 1.7-1.8k. Outside, 2k+.
2)That will depend on the school or poly in question. Some may have custom software they will install on your lappie, some don't. Some will install XP on your lappie, some wont put anything on your lappie. Most of the time, it will be your course lecturer asking you to install these software.
3)There are people who already have laptops when they enter poly, and each course may have different requirements. Im sure if you have a lappie when entering poly, it should be able to run the programs well enough. Anyone here still have P III Moblie laptops?
Not too sure, cause not in poly.
ok~~ thank for all ur opinions ^^

1) Like what they've previously said, poly it fair's laptop pricing is lower compared to outside pricings, the laptop sold there can also have a better specs like processor & ram.
2) Depends la... all laptops needs to be configured to the course itself, but if u cheapo can buy xp then upgrade to dual-boot with vista, but that's RP only la... SP's os is dependent on course, they dont allow os upgrade on certain courses.
UT can be installed with a .exe file 1, so not much worries there...(Plus it's flawed)
3) Yes & they've paid for it with trips to the IT helpdesk, spend a few hours there installing stuff and get bored out of their minds... generally spoil faster than poly bought laptop too... dont know why...
But like alott of people said before, dont buy the laptop until it's completely necessary, because prices these days dropping like flies... by the time u reach poly it'll be quite slow... Oh & those poly insurance are close to usless, other than the 1yr hardware warranty...
