1) poly and own laptop got what difference?
2)isit like for some poly got certain software that only that particular poly's laptop has?
3) do u have friends who didnt buy the laptop from the poly fair? can u tell me about how they 'worked' the laptop to suit the school's requirements and stuff?

1. Depends on what diploma u r taking. some diplomas require yr PC to have a certain program or requirement. (Applies to both poly n own PC)
However, if u use poly PC, most likely u can only rent 1 for a price.
2. No for most of e time.
3. Poly will tell u when to come n program yr PC. That's if u alr have yr own PC. If u buy at e fair, everything is programmed for u alr.
FYI, i'm from sp.

is there a way to get that ' certain program or requirement'( examples please? _)
so far i read read read only noe those taking media need macbook, which is not the course im interested in...
and i guess the specs are not gona change after 1 yr x.x
unless suddenly bill gates bankrupts and vista becomes obselete . lol.
lol limymv , have 2 plan, if not buy another laptop for nothing !
1k++ sia ! x.x
that of course if the course needs specific requirements and the software. The best is to get from Poly and not self as everything is preconfigured for you; VPN, domain and the specs should be there.
I got my laptop from MDA and everything is preconfigured for me, especially the Fibre optics connection. =)
you so sure you will pass o levels to cont to poly? scali fail how?

it is when poly asks u to config yr PC (in Q3). but u must be sure that yr PC has e min requirements to install those programs.
usually the poly will let u noe what is e min requirements for yr pc.

i see, but it is possible to configure it urself right? one of the posts above said so.
erm has any1 done this b4? tell me what happened? haha.
you think will they let you configure it yourself?
I think then the security would be breeched.
i'm studying in poly now.
i brought my laptop outside and configure it in school. so everytime i reformat it, i will need to go to school to configure it. it took me 3 hours to finish the configuration.
in the end, i found a way to bypass the configuration and still able to use school wireless network. for the software, i use *ahem software.
going which poly?
i think its best if u concentrate on ur studies rather than consider what laptop to get for poly. anyway your laptop spec might be considered lousy by the time you go poly.

?
NYP desktops are slow as well. we are still stucked with 15", i am wondering when can they upgrade to ws
but stick with desktops are always safer as LAN is always faster than wireless
our school desktops also damn slow.
pentium 4 HT IBM PC's, intergrated intel graphics with 15 inch samsung CRT's.
but.
there are exceptions. we have a fleet of 9 HP xw4300 workstations and one xw9300.
all are equipped with nvidia quadro graphic cards, 2gb ram, 3.2ghz pentium 4 HT for the xw4300, and an unknown speed (so far) AMD opteron for the xw9300.
sadly, all come with 17" SQUARE lcd.
its better to buy lappies at the IT sales in poly
cos, if u buy before u go to poly, ur lappie will downgrade very very fast
like 1 year later, need to keep going service center
all brands are the same
and the worst part is, some courses need some special OS, or some program that can only run on some OS
and u are the only person in your class who is different
like when i was year 1, but i bought a lappie when i was in sec 4
mine was xp home, poly people all use windows pro
i had to change OS, add on shits and everything
the worst part is, mine spoils faster, and laggier, and slower than theirs
tahan the gian-ness la, or else u sure regret in your 3 years in poly
btw, horticulture and nursing dont need laptop

media school, and animation course in IT school need mac only
others all windows vista now
dun dumb dumb get XP
everyone use vista, den use vista
An advise to you is to wait after sec 4 then buy your laptop from your poly's IT fair.
Why?
1) Laptop is getting cheaper and cheaper each year and the specs are getting better each year. When I mean cheap and better, I means really a fking big difference.
I bought my laptop for about 2.5K and guess what? The next year, they are selling a laptop with a spec alot better than mine at 1.2K+. It gives you a 'wtf?' feeling.
2) If you gonna buy at sec 4, you're gonna find your laptop becoming obsolete even before your poly starts. Welcome to the world of IT, where your few thousand dollars assets depreciate into a few hundreds in just a few months.
3) Normally, poly IT fair they will have those 3 years warranty offer at a cheaper rate, please get it even though it cost you about 100 to 200 more. It will worth the money, trust me.
