have you try changing the drive letter for your external devices? maybe they are sharing the same drive name thatz why you cannot see your dvd writer anymore after you install your xhardisk...
Can you try those devices in question on another computer (your old system, or your friend's - whichever you can lay your hands on) so that we can determine whether the problem is caused by the respective devices or your computer?

if the ext casing cannot detect the hard disk then why u purchase it?
can u get it replaced by going back to the vendor?
as for your ext DVD/CD drive, go to device manager to remove the device and reinstall it.
if you cannot view the device, select show all hidden devices in device manager.
The usb cables for your ext hdd casing should have 2 splitted usb cables. in case anyone's wondering what's with having an extra usb port, it is for extra power, if the other can't supply adequate power which will not enable the hdd to run.
Plug in both usb cables into the usb slots and try.
