since U gamer...DIY from sim lim.
icic.. actually is more for family + games.
simlim? thought most of the shops scam ppl one, haha. diy to up-to-date specs is it at least need $1500? thanks
Not exactly need to be 1.5K, 1.5K can get u something very good also
Since u are gaming, u need to have powerfull processor, and good graphic card, shops in simlim does not really cheat ur money, u can see from their price list:
http://bellsystems.com.sg/UploadedImg/Pricelist%208%20Nov%2008.pdf
The price varies around ten to 30 dollars
for example, shop A :
CPU-----$100
MOtherboard----$50
SHopB:
CPU----$80
MOtherboard----$$70
both adds up to $150 dollars
From the price list above, i will customise a system for you now to show you that u can get very up to date stuff
if you are not going to run 2 or 3 graphic card at once, a normal motherboard is very enough
MSI G31M3-f w/vga and sound motherboard + A Q9400(2.66ghz with 6mb l2 cache, ruynning at 1333mhz fsb) quadcore processor, this cost $537
Lets say for a family computer, u store lots of games and movies, and you decided to play safe and get a 1 terabyte(1K gigabyte) seagate barracuda sata hdd, that cost $188
RAMS:
And lets say u get a 2gb kit ram, kit rams are rams that run at same timing, so the performance is better, taht will cost you $73, howeever, if you are running vista, it is important that u get 3gb and above
OR
a 2gb kingston value ram, it will cost $36
NOw since u are gaming, ur graphic card isv ery important,a s it should not be so slow that it cannot run any game or it runs so fast taht it slows down ur processor, anyway the Q9400 is very good already
The motherboard, kingston ram, hdd cost $761 in total
If you get the powerful gtx280, it will cost $685 just the card itself
total will be $1446
Now since u are gaming, ur graphic card is very important, as it should not be so slow that it cannot run anygame, and it cannot be so fast that it slows down ur processor,
Anyway, ur processor is already one of the good quadcores around
Power supply, aerohorse 500 watts will be enough to run it, it cost $115
the 650 watts version costs $155
Total will be $1561 for the the parts only
there u can see 1.5 K can get u a very good graphic card and very good processor
but in real time, there is not a need to use such a good graphic card, i regretted buying my 3870x2
Lets say you downgrade ur grpahic card from the gtx280 to a leadtek9800gt which is very veyr enough, that graphic card cost you $219
From $1561, minus off the cost for the gtx 280($685) and add in the cost for 9800gt($219),
it cost around $1095
there you have it, if you want to go for the higher end gtx 280, it will cost 1.5 K
How ever, you you downgrade abit to 9800gt, it cost you 1095, when u are at simlim, u can talk with the owner about changing the graphic card, ram, etc
thanks mypillowtalks that's really useful, now that i can have a rough idea of what is what.
i think the 9800gt version is good enough le (performance-wise n cost-wise), even after adding monitor, router n vista also still affordable.
anyway, is it advisable to change your suggested parts, eg MSI G31M3-f w/vga & sound motherboard + Q9400 ($537) ---> BIOSTAR GF7050V-M7 Geforce7050 w/VGA+Sound+G.Lan ($508)? not sure of all these brands..

Sorry, i tink i confused myself and you as well, i believe that i told you that a MSI G31 can be used, but i did not realise that it uses a PCI express x16 slot for the graphic card
THe 9800gt uses a pci express 2.0 x16, means that the data it can transmit through the slot is much higher
If you use the 9800gt with the G31 and the 7050(which both uses the PCI express x16), the graphic card will not be able to perform as the speed is limited.
You need a motherbaord with a PCI express 2.0 slot. The Asus P5QLE does have a pci express 2.0 slot
This can be illustrated as A strong pump pumping water out of a small hole vs a strong pump pumping water out through a bigger hole. THe one with the bigger hole gets much more performance
In simple terms, because the technology of the 2 motherboards are older, therefore it will limit your graphic card from performing.
Okay, i tried to recustomise abit, i used a motherbaord with 1 pci express 2.0 slot.
THe complete system will be as follow:
Asus P5QLE + Q9400 = $614
Kingston DDR2 800 RAM = $36
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD = $188
Leadtek 9800GT = $219
LG 22x DVD SATA DVD drive = $39
Aero Horse Power 550W power supply unit=$115
Cooler Master Centurion 5 Casing = $79
ToTAL FOR CPU= $1288
So you have to add in around $193 extra because of my carelessness
Another solution will be to get a smaller HDD, a Hitachi 500gb will cost onli $92
Total cost will be $1288 - $188(price for the 1tb) + $92(price for the 500gb)= $1192
If you still want to cut down the price, u can get a slightly lower performance graphic card, like the 9600gt. I will not recommand 9500gt, as it is more of a basic graphic card
So from $1192 - $219(price for the 9800gt) + 159(price for 9600gt) = $1132
Samsung 22" Monitor = $339
Of course u can go down to simlim a few times and ask the shop owners for opinion.
Some may want to earn your money by asking you to get a better motherboard like the x48, striker 2 formula, but those are for better performance as they can support ram with higher speed, they can run 2 or 3 graphic cards, they can overclock better, look nicer
Okay, i know it is not very right to post links to other forums
http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=1093205
that thread have many 'ready' customised system.
the author did the same thing as me, picking out parts and combining them
you can look at the parts name, look at the price list, change the parts and calculate the price of ur system. For example u can change from 4gb to 2gb ram, from core 2 duo processor to a quadcore, or a better graphic card for instance
rremember u need not buy wad i had wrote, can always go down to simlim and discuss with the shop owners

the monitor wise can also get a Samsung 2253LW, which is a 21.6" at $300, almost the same performance.
thanks for the suggestions mypillowtalks & nenepokey. will use them as reference when i go there soon.
one last question though: is there any lower price 'season' for these computer parts? cos end of yr alwys have IT shows, wondering if will have sales for parts too

no problem. IT show seasons ar...that i'm not very sure whether the prices will go down or not
wait for it show, price will drop drastically...

Erm, why dun u go for 4870x2? maybe 2 300gb raptor on raid
i regretted buying 3870x2 and my x48 motherbaord, i did not crossfire

correct me if I am wrong...but I always though the sweeter deals are from those branded systems....DIY parts are not that discounted...not worth the human squeeze to get...go Sim Lim before/after the fair better.

Hmm, depends of which system u are getting, if u are buying for office use, those normal web surfing/office work, the branded ones are cheaper or around the same price
everything with monitor for the price of 500+ for realy basic PC, if u are lookin at price list now, just the basic monitor will cost around a few hundred already
not to mention the casing etc
But for real performance system, thebranded PC will not give u very huge powersupply like 800-1000 watts, the motherboard will never be asus striker 2 formula, they give u value rams instead of the dual channel kits, they will not give you a 4870x2 or 4850 graphic card, they might just throw in a 9500gt(which is a basic card eventhough it starts with the '9')
most importantly what is your budget?

without the monitor was 2.4K
I bought earlier this year(a few months back) and i believe they are more expensive at that time
my 3870x2 graphic card was selling at $640
My X48 and Q9450 cost quite a bomb at that time also

wah! now ur same 3870x2 (PowerColor) dropped to $279 leh...probably i should get a quad core.

ya, but i cannot find it in simlim lea, must go banleong buy isit?
quadcore is fine bah, im using Q9450, but now they stop 9450 and change it to 9400, onli 6mb L2 cache

so do u find ur processor smooth?
Originally posted by nenepokey:so do u find ur processor smooth?
Yes, the processor is smooth, and quite hot at the same time, which i suspect is due to my 3rd party cpu cooler(Asus silent knight 2). I do video rendering and encoding sometimes, and it runs very very hot when all are at 100% load
