hi! I have a desktop currently using a USB wireless adapter, connected to my wireless router. Recently, this problem of having "automatic private address" keep appearing and the ip address is not the one which i specify in my router's DHCP server.. and i cant surf the web, though i am connected to my home wireless network. In the past this does nt happen.. only the past week.. and from the past week till now, i did not change any settings of my router nor wireless adapter.. y is this so? can anyone help me?
Follow the instructions to disable APIPA.
The probable cause of your problem might be that your DHCP server is down or having some problems. Restarting your router should fix the problem. You could also try to reset the router to factory settings if restarting does not work.
You should also go to your windows Adminstrative Tools -> Services and make sure the DHCP Client service is running.
i tried wad u say.. but still the same.. i also reset my router liao.. still the same.. still got the stupid automatic private address.. anyone else have any solution? thanks
If you had done the registry modifcation to disable APIPA, you should NOT be getting any automatic private address anymore.
Another thing you can try is to manually key in your ip and see if you can use the internet.
ok... i redo the registry thingy, and the automatic private address did not appear anymore.. but... it still stuck at the aquiring network address there.. and my ip address is blank... i manually typed the details in my ip.. but still got no internet..
Did you key in your gateway ip manually too? This will be your router ip. You also should manually key in your DNS server ip.
You should also in Run, type cmd, then in command prompt, type ipconfig /all > C:\test.txt
Copy and paste the contents of that text file here.
btw, i do not know my DNS server ip.. how can i find tat? i am using starhub maxonline... the rest i type in liao..

How come your IP Address is a public one? If you are connecting to your wireless router, you should probably have a private one like 192.168.1.x
The router should also have a private IP like 192.168.1.1 and that is what you u key into the default gateway. Your IP should then be 192.168.1.2.
oh.. the 113.X.X.X is the ip add of my router.. i changed it from the usual 192.x.x.x i set this long time ago.. no prob.. den recently start to go crazy.. dont know y...
and btw, my internet is back to normal... funny sia... but... the surfing speed is very very slow... though the signal bar is 4 bar..
Might be wise to change back to 192.168.1.x set as this is specially for internal use. If you use a public IP, it may clash with other external ip.
So the DHCP is working now?
Seems like everything is working now. If it don't work again, I guess the router is faulty. So what is the brand of your router?
latest update.. not working again.. i cant surf the net again... i did not change any settings.. jus cant work suddenly.. sigh... i contact D link tech support liao.. waiting for their reply..
For the DNS server entries, try these values:
Select Specify name server addresses and enter the DNS server address:
after diagnosing with D link email support, i am bringing my wireless adapter for RMA exchange at PCpro.. but i wonder if is it the router or the wireless adapter at fault?
exchange for a new wireless adapter... problem solved.. thanks guys..
are you using vista or xp?
