i had a laptop HDD which's being formated already.
Is there any OS that can be downloaded from an open source?
Or can u just bring the HDD to the computer shop and ask the people there do it for u without having to bring the laptop itself?
http://www.ubuntu.com/
what about microsoft window's OS? is it possible with that?
U mean u want a FREE download of a FULLY OPERATIONAL Microsoft Windows OS?
I think can download BETA but not FULLY OPERATIONAL OS.
what's the difference btw BETA and FULLY?

Beta means public testing and the software still got plenty of bugs. For Microsoft OS, usually you cannot download one. Unless you are members of TechNet or something like that then you get to download or order a beta version of the OS when it is just coming out. Microsoft beta usually have a time limit one so after a while it is not longer usable.
It's usually for software developers to get a feel for a new OS and to make sure their own programs can run OK on the new OS.
For you, either you buy original Microsoft OS and they send u the disc or you go open source OS like Ubuntu. Another option is to find a friend with a disc, but you did not hear that from me.
u can download ubuntu and burn into a disc, then install it
set ur bios to boot CD first, then install ubuntu on laptop
how much would a window xp OS original cost? best to buy at where?
Win XP no longer being sold except for certain lightweight systems like netbooks. For new PC, there is an option to purchase Vista with a downgrade to XP.
ok noted...anyway is it possible to install an MS OS to a HDD then put insert HDD to the intended lappie without having to bring the lappie itself?

I think should be OK but cannot activate yet coz that will involve sending info about your system to Microsoft to generate the key. IIRC, one of the things they send is your processor serial number or id.
U have to wait until u plug into your lappie then only activate.
