I know this has been asked before, but i also forgotten where liao...xD let me ask a few question hor...
1. How do you encrypt a network? Is network ID consider encrpytion?(got ask for a 40-bit network key when i was joining it for my sis.)
2. How to monitor how many users are on the network?
3. This LinkSys wireless router is currently using a compatability "signal" thingy, think it's a older ieee something... can her laptop support the "best signal strength" if it's about 4yrs old? (the laptop, not the sis...)
Thx~
1. Log in to your router (check your router gateway address, typically it's 192.168.1.1). Navigate around. You will find a section named Security or Encryption or something similarly named.
In that section, you will see WEP, WPA or even WPA2. WPA2 is the best offered. However, it's not supported in XP. Kindly do not apply WPA2 before you install a patch for XP.
Before enabling WPA2 on XP, please install this patch - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=662BB74D-E7C1-48D6-95EE-1459234F4483&displaylang=en
What do you mean by network ID? As in the network name of your wireless network?
Network key is automatically generated by the router... all you need is the correct password to access it.
2. Typically, logging in to your router to see is enough. Or a program like Network Magic, courtesy of meltz.
3. I assume the signal you're referring to are stuffs like 802.11B, 802.11G ?
Hmm.. then i think that i did encrypt it.
I think that my sis's laptop is using 802.11G, like most in it's generation...
But will installing the WPA2 on xp help the connection speed & signal strength? like i said it's quite old liao... =s
No. Encryption has nothing to do with signal strength and connection speed.
By the way, connection speed of wireless has no impact on the max speed given to you by your ISP. If it's 1MB max, it's just 1MB. The number 54MB is only applicable to home networks, when you transfer files between 2 or more PCs in your own network, not over the Internet.
Do you have another PC or laptop which use wireless? If so, how's the signal strength? Is it good or bad?
eh only the laptop wireless only... the other comp(this 1) is using wire...
the signal strength will vary 1 eh... even if it's like less than 1 metre away... most time excellence, but still will kana dc for nothing 1... Y ah?
Linksys router... sorry I don't have a good impression of them. Either you dump the router or bear with it.
lol... nvm la... she buy @ comex one.... besides, she's the 1 using the wireless... =p thx!
