burning videos onto DVD?

  hi all,
  
  i've a folder of videos in different format: .wmv, .avi, .asf, .mpg.....
  
  i'll be buying a portable DVD player and i wanna burn all these videos onto a DVD+R.
  
  so, 2 questions:
  
  1) any free software for burning videos onto DVD?
  
  2) in order for the videos to be watchable on the portable DVD player, is there any specific format i should burn them as? or can i just burn as data format?
  i'm scared the portable DVD player can't understand if i just burn as normal data format.
  
  i'm quite lost.
