Have you...formatted your HDD?
What do u mean by format? assigning a new letter? but the drive isnt detected in the disk management. :(
how to format when i can't reach the hard disk? cannot find where's the hard disk in "My Computer"
@dcx:
You'll need to access it through Disk Management.

@gohby:
So there's no partition like "Unallocated" under Disk Management? Does your computer show that it's connected to the system? (like a "New Hardware Found" message)
alright man!!!!!!!!!!
It works!!!!!!!!!!!woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
alright!!!!!!!! ok.....time to back up my porn libraries....muahahaha...
Under disk management, only the C drive + details are shown. Dont see any "unallocated" anywhere leh. When I connect the HDD to the computer, there is a sound from the computer. And under the (safely remove hardware) green arrow thingy in the taskbar, it shows "Disk Drive" or "USB Storage USB Device" (something like tt). But it aint reflected in the "My computer" either.
So you don't see a long black bar labelled "Unallocated" like this?
Hmm...try the suggestion below:
"I recently installed an external hard drive and some similiar problems. Turn your computer off, then unplug the USB cable and then the power to the drive. Restart you computer, plug the power into the hard drive, wait 10 seconds and then plug the USB into the computer. This clears the hard drive buffer. See if the drive shows up in disk management. Before formating, turn off your antivirus. I had no problems once I did that."

Didnt really get this method. Isnt the USB cable connected to the external disk and the computer at the same time, so when the cable is pulled out, the power to the drive will "disconnected" already. How to unplug usb cable, then unplug the power to the driveTried this method, didnt work. Now under the safely remove hardware, it shows up as "Generic USB Disk USB device" :S
Hmm...try plugging it into another computer if it's available, and head to Disk Management to see if it's there.
And I found a solution on CNET regarding a similar issue (generic device message):
"That is typical of...
A port that is on the front or USB 1.1.
...
Try the rear USB port as well as the LEGACY USB setting in the BIOS (try both!)"
