Go and buy a cross Lan cable.
TS don't know that's why ask mah...
to TS
which OS u using?
basically, for windows, you'll need to have "File and Printer Sharing" in your network connection properties (although I seem to recall last time don't need to have this but can still transfer file from 1 pc to another ).
Then you need to assign one folder as assessible by other users (i.e can write/save to that folder)
something like that lah...
Which step u don't understand? Ask and the experts lurking around will fill u in...
desktop is WINDOWS 2000, laptop is WINDOWS XP. i have got "FILE and PRINTER SHARING" enabled. but how come my desktop stil cannot access my laptop?
yeah i share several folders in my laptop.

my ip is auto assigned by the 2wire router. i can ping each other. i cannot see the laptop in my neighbourhood and vice versa.

I presume U know what U are doing when U say the 2 systems can ping each other...cos I dunno if U end up pinging both systems to the router instead.
And have U checked if the router has any firewall installed?
I usually work with domains so I am not familiar with the concept of workgroup...but in any case...changing of workgroup is not difficult mah...just change it to a oxymoron one like WORKGROUP for both systems and try it out....
What file system are you using? FAT32 or NTFS?
NTFS
