hi,
just installed wireless modem 2WIRE. i just installed every by default. below is the summary :
Authentication : Open System
Encryption: WEP 40 or 64 bit
Question :
1. is my Authentication secured? I mean can stranger just make use of my wireless to surf the net? if not where to set? i did access the http://gateway.2wire.net. it is showing authentication is WEP OPEN. i can change to others? then after that must reboot my modem so that the setting takes effect? i try to change to change WEP shared, then the internet is down.
2. can i change my default SSID and network key? i tried to change at the http://gateway.2wire.net, again after i click save, then i was disconnected from the internet. i need to restore back to original.
3. what is the basic secure setting that one must set?
4. i believe what i asked above is the basic question that have been posted before. will you provide the relevant link, pls?
thanks
open system means basically no authetication.. I think there should be a shared key option? if not anyone can just connect with ur connection..
yeah.. you should change ur SSID and network key.. so that you can recognise ur own modem if you were to use wireless devices to connect to it..
If you got WPA, use it, if not WEP. like people mentioned in previous threads, it's a basic security settings la.. if people are bent on hacking ur connection, they will do it by hook or by crook..

then how come i connect using my wifi, it asks for the network key???
Include mac address filtering too

that means you have changed to shared key mode lo.. the network key is the one that you chose for the 40 or 64 bit encryption.. then again, it all depend on ur modem's interface..
I would suggest you use WPA or WPA2 instead. WEP is not very secure because of the way it encrypts stuffs.
