I select the StarHub's broadband, which is the cheapest type, $29 per month.
structure:
catv cable ---- cable modem----net line---notebook
I want to know
1.after cable modem turn on power, does it need dial-up? it runs automaticly, or I dial up with my notebook?
2.does cable modem have DHCP function?
now I open notebook, find connection icon with yellow "!" at the right corner of the screen, I cann't explore the internet.
I think that my notebook cann't get the right IP address.
what can I do?
thank you very much.
by the way
TCP/ip is setuped to Auto.
network card driver is right.
test it with two netlines alternately, so I think netline is right.
I repair the ip with windows function, but still not get the right IP address.
give me your hand, pls
Have you tried calling their customer service hotline?
Are you a new? Have they activated your account?
Have you tried to test it with another Lan cable or another computer?
What do you mean that you did not get the right IP address?
Have you done a "ipconfig /all" in the command prompt?
1. i reckon no dial up is needed for cable.
2. can you find the brand and model of the modem? otherwise it difficult to know.

I would believe netline is the network or lan cable.
A1. If it is a cable modem, it doesn't need to dialup. normally, it just plugs and go.
A2. I do believe starhub has DHCP. So unless you asked and pay for a static IP,most likely it is dymanic.
What you can do?
1. Have you recently, successfully used your laptop to connect to the internet via a LAN/network cable? If yes, proceed.
2. Power on your cable modem, plug in the network cable to your laptop and on your laptop.
2.1 Check your cable modem has four lit LED lights, and also at the send/receive.
3. Next, check whether laptop's network plug flashes orange and green light. if yes, proceed. Else your network card is down.
4. Once Windows finishes loading, go to start, run, type 'cmd'. A black, dos command window will appear.
5. Type 'ipconfig'.
6. Look for IP address. The first 2 numbers need to start with 20*.
7. you can try 'ipconfig /renew'.
7. If still doesn't work, call starhub.
yes, I just arrived at Singapore .
I run "ipconfig /all"
the result is that ip address is 169.254.X.X.
so I believe it is a wrong address.
the rignt address is 20.*.*.*,isnt it?
thank you, let me try.

the modem is connected directly to the notebook with the Rj45 twisted line.

I'm not a starhub subscriber so I cant advise you on the correct IP address. Best person to check with is your ISP.
Check that you do not put any static IP on Lan connections.
I also believe your ISP will be able to tell if you are connected to their network.

it could be 21*.x.x.x
LOL... pity there's no merging threads function here.
I've lost you since you've created a new topic.

You're right. It's a wrong address. It's a private address. Private addresses are not meant for public use. You don't have to Xed it out. Nobody can hack the network when you're having network issues.
Going by the address, it appears that you've connected wrongly.
Have you tried different ways of connecting?
Does the modem come with a manual?
yes, I should call 1633.
but let you laugh at me. my English is poor, so when I call 1633 to StarHub customer service center, I am not able to understand their words at once.
I must excercise my oral English.
if U can, get another PC/laptop to try to connect to test the connection.
else, given you are able to write, drop an email to starhub and ask them to call you then.
ask them to speak slowly.
Usually for first timers, Starhub will set up for you for free. Did Starhub tell you that?
Or have they scrapped this policy?
You may want to ask them again.
