hello.. i noticed that lately whenever the cpu light flashes (meaning that it is reading from the hard disk?) then there will be a screeching sound coming from the cpu.
at first it was pretty soft just like how some external hdds would sound when being accessed. but these few days the screeching sound has gotten louder, somewhat like cd spinning around n getting scratch that kinda sound (but not so loud la).
what could be causing the problem? is there any way to remedy it? i check tt the cd drives are empty alrdy. and the com is pretty new, under a year. please help! thanks lots!
have u impacted the pc hard when its hard disk was being accessed in teh past?
this could be a factor.
the impact causes the read/write head to scratch the surface of the hdd, causing this sound whenever the head runs into the bump
Back up your important files, bookmarks, etc...and budget for a new HD or PC. Meanwhile, feet knee lock tight and get ready for a hard landing.
Oh, after backup, send your pc in for checkup since it's under warranty. Care to share the brand so that we all can AVOID it!
Now, turn your head left and cough!
it's normal lah ...... HDD is just like a car ..... is not built to sound nice .....
oh my, does that mean that the hard disk is goin to spoil soon? but now i notice the sound only comes up whenever the system is 'busy', like when the light flashes non-stop for quite some time, other than that it is quiet.
anyway, i got it from a computer shop in yishun near the interchange where they assembled everything. handled with care when carried home but duno how they treated it in the shop la -_-''
hmm there's no way to fix it already? quite a waste...
I think that to play safe, is to get an ext hdd to back up everything, in case sth really goes wrong.
ext HDD that are powered by electric adaptors(nt usb powered) cost quite cheap, around 99$ for 160gb
If your internal HDD reallly spoils, it isn't expensive also, i got my 500gb for $199, but it is a SATA HD, solid state harddrives are more durable to shocks, but not too much shocks
My old computer have screeching sound from the HDD when i start last time, really scary cos sound like things rubbing against each other, but after reformatting it seems fine, weird, as it should not have solve the problem.
you should get an ext HDD to backup, incase ur old HDD cannot be accessed
i see.. haha ya thats the kind of sound comin from my cpu too. very irritating esp when playing game then keep on so noisy.
alright thanks i guess backing up my stuff is the only thing to do now..
BACK IT UP IMMEDIATELY !
ARRGHHHHHH I LOST ALL MY STUFF LAST YEAR BCOS OF HARD DISK KAPUT !
HDD might die soon.
how old is your HDD? These things will eventually spoilt when it's too old, cant help it.
lol moaning neighbours sounds wrong..
its like nearly 1 yr old? assembled in computer shop one.. if they keep the hdd for very long le i also won't know..
usually hdds at least 3 years warranty.
But hor, if data kaput, means gone. They can gib u new hdd but i tell u, u will still cry ah.
This is how your hdd looks like inside the casing.
It is made up of DISCS. from the name hard disc ..
there is a reader/writer needle or head which writes data and reads data.
The screech like you said, is infact cds scratching each other, most prob with the writer head.
These are signs of a failing hdd.
I cannot tell you when it will fail, however, from what you have said : louder and louder.
It means the end is closer and closer.
My suggestion: back up your data first. Save it maybe in an ext hdd/ back up dics (dvd). Do constant backups. You will not know when it would fail. (it could be as long as 2 years?)
Or..
It might be the fans. ( check properly).
do also note that some external hdd casing has no fans
so if it has no fans..
ur screwed.
but if there's a fan maybe its the fan.
cos one day i woke up to a screaming PC.

Let's wait for the ts to reply first.
but from the sounds of it, it shud be the hdd.
maybe his pc under warranty protection, he open pc = warranty gone

Self assembled.
Edit: should have no warranty issues unlike oem manufactuers.
thanks for the replies..
icic.. i think is the hdd, not the fan.. cos sometimes other than the scratchin sound still can hear the fan whirling de sound..
so that means surely got warranty one ah? cos buy that time also nvr think too much.. who knows nowadays the IT things still so fragile -_-''
hdd itself got warranty.
You must see what kind of hdd you are using and go to the manufacters webbie to check for more details about the exchange.
or go back to your shop and tell them that, however, do not give them your hdd in exchange for one. - we wont want another edison chen scandal

its always like that..
u handle it with utmost care and concern while using it, transporting it, but sometimes, in the shop, they think that the pc isnt theirs so they just treat it roughly and lob everything inside
