blah. this happen recently, on both my desktop pc and laptop.
i didnt turn on my laptop for a few weeks, so when i did turn it on last week to use, it show the vista logo, then the welcome screen jammed there for about 30secs, then a black screen with pointer for another 10secs, before finally booting up desktop. i really dont know wad cause this prob
second thing is my desktop pc, same thing happened. i didnt use it for a month, and it also has this 30sec hang time thing, minus the black screen prob.
and these problems persist till today. everytime i boot up the pc it is slow. maybe it is due to my desktop running only 1gb of ram, and i am aware that booting avg 8 and zonealarm at the start (boot program to protect pc only, not virus scan on boot), but this shouldnt happen to my laptop, which has the same 2 programs, but runing 2gb of ram.
i have try to solve the problems by turning off the auto update by avg, and unnecessary programs thru msconfig, but the hangtime still applies.
i am wondering, if adding another 2gb more ram to my desktop will solve the prob.
30 seconds is quite fast, many of them reported minutes.
Originally posted by kenn3th:There are many ways that you can reduce the amount of time it takes Vista to start up. However, what about the amount of time it takes for a system to shut down? There are a few configuration changes you can make to a computer running Vista to decrease shutdown time.
One such change is to prevent Vista from emptying the contents of the page file when it shuts down. Although many people prefer to have the page file cleared on shutdown for security reasons, it does increase the shutdown time. If the speed of things is more of a priority than security, you can prevent Vista from clearing the page file by completing these few simple steps.
1. Click Start, type Registry Editor in the search field and press Enter.
2. Type regedit.exe and click OK.
3. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
4. Double click ClearPageFileAtShutdown.
5. Change the value data to 0.
6. Close the Registry Editor.
Here's another alternative:
1. Start Menu>Search Bar
2. Type regedit.exe and click OK.
3. Navigate to the following registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
You will then see this registry key -
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="20000"
The value 20000 amounts to about 20 seconds. Change that value to something smaller to shorten the wait time.
Reccommended value is 3000 to 5000.
Warning - There is a risk of an unbootable PC if u put the value too low i.e 1000

ok.. i see. but in the first place, wad cause it to be like that? cos when i bought the computer, it didnt take half a min to boot. i have defragged the disk and scanned the com for any bad stuff, none came out. so what exactly is responsible for this cause?
is 18 minutes booting time the norm?
no way.. u 18min or me 18min? mine not so jialat.
anyway i just swtiched on my lappie at kovan macs just now. it started up just fine. no hangtime/ hammertime whatsoever
AVG8 is a problematic antivirus. A lot of people are reporting slow booting issues with AVG8.
If you are able to boot up, do this:
1. Right click on AVG8 icon near the clock and select Open AVG User Interface.
2. Double click on LinkScanner.
3. Under Settings, untick all the boxes.
4. Click on Save Changes.
Please turn Auto Update on for AVG.
i long ago turn off link scanner ler, but still this slow
the aut update i dun need on, cos every time after my pc stabilise i will remb to update. got sticky infront of me tell me update mar. =P
sian wor. now its back to slow boot again. but funny, after booting the thing runs fine.
Maybe you need to turn on your PC more regularly.
Try turning off ZoneAlarm and see what happens.
Try ESET NOD 32 Anitvirus. It is good.
i noe it is...
but y are u telling me this? i ardy said i dont have virus or spyware or anything.
if i did the com would be slow thruout.
but this is just a wierd isolated case that the com is only slow at boot, but runs real fsat after booting.

It's weird all right, I don't think the drivers or startups are causing that.
Let's run in diagnostic mode first.
Start > Run and enter in msconfig.exe
Select Diagnostic startup and restart the computer.
Let's see how it's performing.
k noted. i'll do this when i get back tonight so i can cross reference on one side, using both coms.
