As above.
There is this error message which says, " Media test failure: Check cable."
Can anybody tell me what is that supposed to mean, and what should I do???
Really desperate for help..... my important documents are not backed up....screwed man.
Thanks!
This error can be caused by one or more of the below possibilities.
Verify that no floppy diskette or CD is currently in the computer. If a diskette or CD is in the computer that is not bootable your computer may attempt to boot from that diskette or CD causing this error message.
Additional information and help with getting into BIOS or CMOS setup can be found on here : http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000192.htm
- Verify that your hard disk drive is setup and detected properly in BIOS. You're computer should list a hard disk drive installed either under the main page or the drives page in BIOS. If BIOS indicates the drive is not installed or not detected skip to Hard Disk drive is bad or not connected properly.
- Verify the boot options are properly set in BIOS, almost all BIOS setups should contain options specifying how your computer boots. For example, most computers should have their boot options setup similar to the below example.
- Floppy drive
- CD drive
- Hard drive
- Rest your BIOS to default values. Many BIOS will enable users to reset the values to the default settings. If you've tried the above options without success try resetting the BIOS.
It is possible that command.com or another bootable file may be missing from the hard disk drive. Follow the below steps to possible resolve your issue.
Windows 2000 and Windows XP users
- Boot from either your ERD, your bootable Windows CD, or your bootable restore CD.
- Once boot attempt to repair Windows. If you're able to repair Windows remove the disks and reboot the computer.
If you have attempted all above suggestions and you are still encountering the same issues, verify the connections are properly connected to the computer if the hard drive was recently installed or the computer was moved.
Unfortunately, if all connections are setup properly and all the above recommendations have been attempted, it is likely that the hard disk drive is bad and it will need to be replaced.
90% of the time would be loose connections.
So please do that before anything else.
try reseat ur hdd.... chances are ur hdd up lorry...
Hi Kenn3th,
Thanks for listing the possible causes for my com's problem. About the loose connections part, how would I know which cable is loose? Threre are so many cables .... However, the screen shows this message above the media test failure part:
For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.12a (011210)
PXE-E61 : Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM
Searching for boot record from SCSI....Not found
BrUtUs: what is reseat HDD?

he meant reset/ reformat, but it should not be the case.
make sure the "ribbon cable" is properly attached to the mother board - the place it connects to.
if one end of the cable is nt attached, that means it's a loose connection.
nxt, follow the bios step

oh i mean ur cable could be loose... so check the cables...
but since u put the report i will suggest u go BIOS and change the boot sequence to hdd 1st...
Your computer currently has any operating system installed?
secure your cables~
if your computer has been running fine and after securing the cable dat connects to the HDD, your computer still doesnt boot up, chances are...HDD is gone~
Oh dear....Ive checked the connections and I'm pretty sure that there is no problem with the connections.....So I assume that the HDD needs to be replaced.... But there are a couple of files I die die need to recover.......is it still possible? If not I'm screwed already....my 3 months of work....all gone!

U can try getting a working desktop and taking out its HDD plugging urs in...just to make sure U didnt miss anything....could also be IDE cable problem or even mobo IDE connector problem...
if confirm HDD fail...then it depends on how much U want ur things inside...die die need to recover means it will cost.
