Having this problem since getting my laptop from SP.
Once in a while, after i log in to my account, even though there's an instance of explorer.exe running - there's no explorer no nothing.Only the wallpaper can be seen.
When i open Task Manager, very few process are running.
The cmd.exe,Task Manager and Msconfig were initiated by me.
Even if i terminate and re-initiate the explorer.exe, nothing happen - only after a few minutes then the explorer.exe finally load up to normal state.
Not sure if another problem is related, but i noticed that during the time of the error, there was an error with automatic enrolment as seen in the Event Viewer - "Automatic certificate enrollment for local system failed to contact the active directory (0x8007054b). The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
Enrollment will not be performed."
Can anyone help me?The SP Service Centre cant do anything but reformat, but i do not want that as the other time i sent in my laptop for reformatting(seperate problem),the problem already exist prior to the reformat so im certain reformatting wont solve the problem.
That said,im sure its not my programs nor adware causing the problems because my laptop did not had the exact same data(programs etc) before and after the first reformat.
I think its a problem with a process that load very slow?
This is odd. Why are there so many explorer.exe running?
System processes seem to have loaded fine, but the number of svchost.exe running is too little.
Go to this website and download and run Combofix.

Follow all instructions there and post back the log.
Make sure that Recovery Console is installed as well.

Please do not any how disable services via MSConfig if your computer needs to connect a Windows domain. Re-enable all services back via MSConfig. The box next to Load System Services must be showing a tick, not a green square box.
Then restart your computer.
If you want to disable any services, I will tell you which ones to disable and how to disable them safely. Computers connected to a Windows domain work differently from a computer connected to a home network.

Hmm...the multiple explorer.exe may be due me terminating the process and accidentally intiating it twice.
Abt the System Services,i was trying to see if some suspecious one(shown as unknown origin, not Microsoft) was causing the prob.
Log coming up next.
...
PS: BTW,i couldn't find the Recovery Console for Windows XP Service Pack 3,so i installed SP2 one instead. Is it ok?
Yes.
Ceecookie, can you upload the Combofix log to Mediafire? Some letters got truncated.
Log can be found at C:\Combofix.txt
Do you recognize this file in your thumbdrive?
bqk.bat
Nope.I never seen this before.
Have you found a solution to this strange problem?
BTW,the laptop has two partition - XP and Vista,so do u want a Combofix log of the Vista partition?
Mayi...found a solution?
Not yet. I will get back to you tomorrow.
Don't run Vista yet.
Somehow after using the diagnostic tools, the problem went away by itself.
Controlled testing revealed that i can boot up successfully to the Explorer Screen(taskbar and all) now without any problem.
However, another problem popped up after that :/
The login process and the explorer loading time is now rather slow.
During the 1st problem( explorer not loading), assuming it managed to load up successfully,it will take only about a second or so for the taskbar and all to appear
But now, other than the slow loading time, even the login process also is very slow.
The moment i pressed enter after inputting the correct password,it would take several seconds(with the login box greyed out) for it to dissapear and the Explorer to load.
Even so,only the wallpaper will appear immediatelly and it take another few second for the explorer to finally load up fully.
I booted up in Safe Mode and this problem did not exist,so i think its the services again
Ok,after some Yahoo-ing, i managed to solve the 2nd problem a bit
What i did was to run gpedit.msc and disable "Always wait for network at computer startup and login".
That solved the slow delay for the login process only, the Explorer Screen is still loading slowly.
Can u check if SearchProtocolHost.exe is causing the problem?Im a little suspicious when the explorer screen finally loaded up when it terminated
I think the slow loading explorer is related to this issue.
http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-12447-Slow-xp-logon.html
I also just had this issue and
this helped me fix it. If wireless card is enabled with Windows, even
if the Wireless adaptor is switched off (i.e. in our case on Dell
laptops, you can press Fn F2 to switch it off), the 2-3 minutes of
hanging during the logon process occurs.
"Disabling the wireless card through Windows fixes the issue and logon
occurs instantly. We went so far as to create a VB application which
disables users' wireless cards at boot up and also a group policy which
sets the "Wireless Zero Configuration" service to manual so no one gets
this issue. If they need to use wireless, once Windows has loaded, they
can right click on a system tray app, choose connect to wireless
network and it then disables ethernet card, enables wireless card and
starts the "Wireless Zero Configuration" service. This has fixed the
slow boot up and logon problem for all our laptops.
Many thanks!"
This work for me(the disabling,i dont have the VB thingy lol) only when logging in and after logging off.If i restart and log in,the problem persists.
I think the problem is related to the wireless?
Where are u mayi?
Im really at my wits' end.
Even the "Always wait for network at computer startup and login" option disabled dont work anymore. And instead it caused even more delay at the login process...for now i set the Max Wait time for group policy to be 300 and that seems to put it back to normal as with the first option.
you have dual boot right?
either to vista/ xp?
can vista work?
That is right.I found out that they use NEOGrub to dual boot.
Vista is completely unaffected by this.I think its some complications with the windows domain accounts because its sorta a work laptop.
LOL... you will hate Windows domain accounts. Will have to tweak those accounts.
Can you boot to Safe Mode and remove all security programs?

Security as in antivirus program?
I dont have the installer to install back the provided McAfee, because it was sort of integrated into the disk image that they copy to the HDD.

All security programs like firewall, antivirus, antispyware, etc.
McAfee removal tool can be found here - http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
Its kinda too risky?
I dont have the installer to install it back
Another solution is to remove windows xp from your system and re install it @ sp service centre.

If it's installed from your school... you can get it back through the school.
If it comes with the laptop, it's a trial that will expire in about 60 to 90 days unless you pay for it.
You will have to remove it anyway when the trial epxires unless you want to pay.

Nope, its from the school..just that because i know that they integrate the McAfee software into the HDD image so i dont think they have the installer too.
