Hi I think some of you who own external harddisks should face this problem regularly. When you use the "safely remove hardware" feature to eject your external HDD an error saying the device cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it pops up.
Usually when this happens I just restart the computer and remove the HDD when the computer turns off to prevent any chance of my data corrupting. Is there a way to remove it safely without turning off the computer when this problem arises?
i just unplug it lol
there is a program which u can download..
look for it at www.freewaregenius.com
did you close all programs? Sometimes when you used a program to access a data in the disk, then when you stop accessing the data, yet left the program on, depending on the software, it might still report to windows it is using your drive.

window screwed up one la.
sometimes you closed everything, they still gives you that error.
oh, and when that happens, i just unplug it.
in fact, i find it a redundant move. cos most of the time i just skip the safely remove h/w and just plug out directly. never had any problem with my thumbdrive/external hdd.
1. Save all opened programs settings. Open Task Manager
2. Find explorer.exe and click on End Process
3. Click on File > New Task (Run...) and enter in explorer.exe
4. Safely removely the external HDD

mi too... i nv remove it safely
In the long term, will spoil it... just end explorer.exe and restart it... save your work before doing so... because some programs rely on explorer. Once disappeared, so are your work...

Optimize it for quick removal and you can remove it any time you need without having to go through "Safely Remove Hardware" each time. Just make sure no running application is accessing the removable drive as they may be writing data into it and a sudden removal would cause a loss of data. The link below brings you to a forum topic with its starting post on how to do it and with its pros and cons discussed in the subsequent posts.

Get unlocker from
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
Right click on drive and choose unlock so it will free any process accessing it.Then u can remove it or stop the explorer as some one mentioned above. This is easier.
Note:If u remove HDD(not USB sticks) without safely removing it,its not healthy and will affect life.
