i am new here.
need some advice.
Presently have a DELL notebook running on XP OS.( about 4yrs old)
But it ran out on me. ( now only can run on battery.... not able to run on AC alone..... crazy sometimes can charge battery n sometimes cannot )
Anyway before it die on me, got to get a new one.
But in the market now only have Vista loaded computer.
Heard that Vista is still not stable.
Kindly advise what option do i have.
thank you.
There are still XP machines available. But they tend to cost a tad higher than the Vista machines.
If cost isn't a concern, then you could get it. XP machines specs are also better, as compared with those Vista. Some Vista machines have real basic specs, barely able to run Vista.
Vista, on the whole now is quite stable. More and more programs are developed for Vista, more and more drivers for Vista.
With the release of SP1, it seems much better now. I've not really heard of complains from anyone except those whose programs and drivers are incompatible with SP1.
I thank you for the reply.
Have been looking around some branded computer.
Acer is one of them.
They are giving Vista Home Premium over the Basic.
Can we buy and then downgrade to XP .... Will there be any problems?
Downgrading to XP isn't an issue. Make sure that drivers are provided by the laptop manufacturers because Microsoft doesn't provide them. Even if Microsoft does, it's only the bare basics to make the hardware work.
Vista consume a lot of memory ram...so unless u got a lot of ram on ur laptop vista not advisable...anyway vista is quite stable now since SP1 is out....so should not have much problems with it.

I cant comment on Sp1 because I cant seem to get my laptop to download it.
Some models of Dell offers xp alternatives, if you built them online.
If you were to get a desktop/laptop now, most prob, it will not be installed with sp1 just yet. You can either wait for sp1 to be preinstalled in it or get a computer now and update it yourself.

if your problem is just the AC adapter and not the dell laptop itself
why not just replace your AC adapter?

No idea why you can't get Vista if you are using the ang moh version of Vista.

Scroll down to Cause 5 and read it. If it's not Cause 5, read through the whole document.
SP1 probably won't reach SG until April.

I m using the eng version of the OS.
Biometric (Fingerprint) Sensors
• | AuthenTec Fingerprint Sensor with the Atswpdrv.sys driver file – version 7.7.1.7 or earlier |
• | UPEK Fingerprint Sensor with the Tcusb.sys driver file – version 1.9.2.99 or earlier |
I think that should be the case. .
Well, you can always format and install XP on the laptop...
AuthenTec Fingerprint Sensor with the Atswpdrv.sys driver file – version 7.7.1.7 or earlier
Found the problem.
However, i cannot find an updated driver. I m still using 7.7.0.7.
Wait for your laptop manufacturer to update it... maybe can try hunting around for drivers.
Hunted down.
Updated, no sp1 as of yet =(
Sp1 got lah...when i bought my cpu from cybermind they update my vista to SP1 2....extremely stable leh...they even left the sp1 patch on my system...548mb for the whole patch...after u patch ur vista to SP1....it will be very stable...so far no problem with it at all...
hi, noopi..... have check the adapter with another notebook.... it works fine on it......maybe something to do with the internal thing ..... very strange is that it had to start up with the battery pack ... den it will alternate work on AC .. den battery.
Thank you to all, for all the advice...
looks like i have to wait for the Vista with Sp1, and also to have more memory ram.
Anyway .... is Acer a good enough brand.... Value for Money.?
