Hi guys ....
My need is simple .... but with a few questions .
1.Surf internet , emails ....
2.Watch clips and listening to songs on YouTube
3.A bit of Excel and Word ( not much )
4.Not much of a gaming person .
I don't mind if it's a AMD or Intel Pentium Dual Core
As long as it's fast , not taking age to load a video clips.
My question : Is this Basic Asus good enough ? For my simple need ?
Can this Asus instal with basic software like MS Word / MS Excel and MS Powerpoint , and not caused the speed to slow down ?
Is this Asus durable , like i need it for at least 3 years ?
Does this Asus quite the same like any desktop ? Or in fact , DeskTop computers and laptops are all the same .
Is this Asus Wifi ?
Is this Asus built in with a modem ? ( i already subscribe to Starhub broadband )
Need some expertise answers from u guys .
Thanks guys .
Also guys ...
This Asus screen is tiny , right ?
Can i possibly hook-up into my 19" LCD Monitor with a USB ?
Can this Asus instal with a external CD rom that burns CD ? Or does it already instal with a CD writer ?
Can it be used with an external mouse ?
this looks like the Asus Eee PC that I bought on Sunday
Wonderful for Internet because can surf in bed
has built in skype and all sorts of messenger programmes, like i use msn, so i just log in to msn
of course got wifi
of course fast because I upgraded to 2GB Ram ($598 plus $62 for the 2GB Ram, total i paid $660)
got built-in web cam
it operates in Linux-Open Office (ie. not xp-MS Office)
but word doc made in xp-pc can open in this Asus
and doc made in this Asus can open in your xp-pc
i subscribe to singnet Broadband
so i just log into the Internet using wifi
just key in my WEP key, can use liao
no need another modem
i dunno can last for 3 yrs or not becos the model is new, and i just bought it
they have launched a 8GB (mine is 4GB) one which operates with xp
but it's not in Singapore yet
and it will be much more expensive
by the way, it uses flash memory (ie. the 4 GB thingy) and not hard-disk
so it is knock-proof
(just dun knock until crack your screen lah...)
i use it to surf net at home at night on my bed
and i bring it to office for meetings
(i have PC in the office, but with this i dun hv to lug my laptop to work also, for meetings)
i'm loving it
my colleagues all say it's cool man cool man

yes 7-inch screen
i was told if i want to use it for presentation (LCD), can connect it to bigger screen using dunno wat i forgot haha
(why u want to hook up to your 19" monitor? i use it to surf in bed)
it has no CD Drive (so you cannot install programmes using CDs, anyway not much space for you to install this install that, and besides, most programmes are for MS eg xp etc and not Linux compatible)
it has 3 usb ports
so probably can use external CD ROM
can use with mouse
http://event.asus.com/eeepc/microsites/en/index.htm
http://eeepc.asus.com/global/guide.htm
you probably dun wan to use this for normal working
because the screen is small
keyboard keys are smaller too of course
so you cannot type as fast
but it's ideal for functions that i have just described
(i have a 19"-screen dell in the office
and a ThinkPad at home)
Need to check out their MS XP version , they juz launched . U think expensive ?
Hope not much of a diff .....
Sounds good . Wifi ...can go Mcdonald .

ASUS EEE!!
i want..
abit siao today, sry.
The xp version was launched as an alternative a few months ago, but singapore got it just recently.
Looking at the price wise, i would say it's cheap, however, 4gb/8gb of memory is not enough. do note that about 1gb would be used for backups, asus softwares and the os it self, so u will have only about 3gb+ to use.
The speed of the processor if i m not wrong, is 800mhz. It might not be able to process things as fast as the processors nowadays. (Think windows 2000 )
However, this is offset by having a large amount of ram 2gb.
Since it has 3 usb ports, you can always add on a mouse, external cd reader and a hdd/thumb drive for more storage, so i dont think it's quite an issue, except for lugging these around.
If you were at last week's IT show, packard bell laptops were going for just $600+. It would be a better buy than this.
However, a few plus points would be the small screen and the light weight of the machine, which makes it a cheap and a good personal assistant for those on the move.
If you have a car, you can buy a gps adaptor and connect it to your laptop to act as a naviagtor, or a in car entertainment system as it's small enough to fit on the drive board.
If you are using it to just read emails, watch youtube, docs. but NO photoediting, then this laptop will be fine. (although if you are using windows office 2007, it would experience quite a lag).
singapore don't have the xp version yet
i have called asus to check
i am using a 8GB thumbdrive between home and office
so storage is not a problem
i can open my pics in the eee
but i cannot dl my pics from my F31 (digi cam) to the eee because the software is not compatible with linux
so that is a downside
that means if i go travelling
i cannot dl my pics to upload to the my blog
but then one should not blog so much while holidaying lah haha
so far i have only seen the white eee and the black eee before
i got the black one
same feel as my ThinkPad
but the box shows other cool colours including baby pink, baby blue and lime green colour
i would have loved to have a lime green one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can install XP yourself....someone in Singapore did it before. The OS of EEE in default is Linux, so you cannot install MSOffice2007, only those OpenOffice/Staroffice.
4GB flash memory and you still need to buy maybe a 8GB/16GB SDHC memorycard/external harddisk with it, if you want to download things to watch, etc etc. Basic usuage like surffing forums should be okay lah, play games is no no liao.
Loading of video clips should depend on your internet, not on the computer itself. EEE does not have a modem built in, but it got wifi inside, hence it can connect to your Starhub modem/router.
Seriously, EEE is more of a portable notebook then desktop, if you want a desktop, should really get a desktop instead. With 600$, you can already build a RIG with better specs.
Connecting to your 19" monitor should not have problems if you got the driver CD for your EEE. If your EEE still in Linux, check if the CD/drivers work with Linux.
DeskTop or Asus .......

what's the probability of using it when u are on the go?
how many hours are you at home?
For a working adult it's most probably on the go > home.
but how often do u use it?

neither
i think u should get a cheap MS laptop
now around $1000 can get oredi
or up your budget to $1500 you can get a pretty good one
eg Packard Bell MV85-002 is $1498 (Core 2 duo, 2Ghz, 1 GB Ram, 120 GB hdd)
if you want to splurge, get the ThinkPad X61, it's about $2999 or T61, it's about $2,599
but confirm can use 5 years
desk top is so passe and takes up space
and you dun play games
asus eee is too small for your everyday use
and do you know how to install xp os in it? install liao will leave ony 900MB space, you have to buy SD card etc etc etc
all these add up and is a hassle if you are not a tech-savvy person
if you die die want a small one so you can go macdonald
you can also get the packard bell XS20-009
it's like the eee
950g
7-inch
but operates in xp
with 1GB ram
30GB hdd
webcam
wifi
$1298
edit: info from packard bell, i think some shops in sim lim, $1,100 can get
