Hi guys
Just the other day, my computer was accidentally switched off when the power in my house was cut by accident. Thus, when I turned on the computer again, to my horror, System Restore was running. We all know that system restore should be the last resort, but I don't know why it automatically came on. Usually, when similar power problems occur, the computer would switch on as per normal but this time it was different.
Thus, I lost everything. Now, the problem I am facing is that I can actually see my old user accounts and the old document folders in C:/Documents and Settings/User Account/My Documents. However, I cannot access the "My Documents" folder at all. A pop-up saying "Access is Denied" comes up. I have seen similar problems by other users on the internet but no one has a solution for the version of Windows I am using, that is Windows XP Home Edition.
Please, please guys help. I really need to recover the documents which is four years worth of work, research and also pictures. My family and friends photos and videos are gone. I have backed up some of these but that was mid-last year, and everything from then till now has not been backed up. Please, please help me.
Thank you
I just re-installed Windows on another hard drive and faced the same issue while trying to access my old files too. But always remember this saying, "A little Googling goes a long way."

There used to be 5 accounts. One original account, one my account, one family account, two gaming accounts.

I tried the article 810881 and it cannot work with Windows XP home edition.
I'll try the second one now...will update on how it goes. Thanks!
APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Why it doesn't work for you?
Disable the Welcome Screen on XP.
Then press Ctrl + Alt + Del twice.
Use the following to log in:
Username: Administrator
Password: Usually blank, but if got, you go and figure out yourself
Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on User Accounts.
Find your user account and change it to Computer Administrator. Apply the settings and log off. See if you can see the user account folder.
This should undo the system restore damage.
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System
Restore. Click Undo my last restoration, and click Next. Follow the prompts and restart your computer.

Well, it doesn't work because for some reason, all my previous restoration points are gone...

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! YOU'RE A LIFESAVER! The second method works!
System restore points gone means system restore has been at one time being reset... looks like the power cut may have done something to it.
